Hi there,

I'm cleaning the black vinyl in the dash etc (the car is stripped) and looking for a way to rejuvenate it - has anyone used DupliColor vinyl dye?

It's a spay and I'm worried it will be more like a paint than a dye - I don't want to fill-in the grain or put on a coating that might flake off after a few years.

Any experiences or other suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Ben

Thanks for the reply - properly cleaned and prepped panels seems to be key but are these products like dye or are they more like paint?

Hey NZCSi, where about's are you located?
It would be cool if more of us classic BMW guys here in NZ could meet up from time to time.
I have contact details now for 2x other coupe owners and 1x 02 guy

As for your vinyl dye, the trick is light coats so you don't fill the grain, it does work, but long term it will start to wear off from what I know of it

Hey Steve, I'm in Auckland but the car is completely stripped at the moment and probably a good year (or more) away.

So although they call it a dye, it's probably more like a paint? I've read that thorough cleaning and an adhesion promoter prior to spraying makes a big difference to how long it lasts.

I guess I just don't want to do something that won't last on the dash because it will probably mean removing the window to get at the dash parts and fix yes?

That's a long discussion....
Vinyl doesn't take dye to the best of my knowledge but you coat it.
Aniline dye leather is strictly dye.
Semi aniline is dyed and coated

Yes, window out to fix the dash, I tried a repair on my dash and it was a fail. I ended up getting the dash pad redone at dashboard restorations over the shore, the did a very nice job.

Anyway, give me call, I have been through all of what your about to do or are doing and will probably be able to give you some pointers,

I will PM you with my cell number
I'm in Titirangi
