Just posting this on the offchance. Going to be in LA for 3 months from the middle of August. Does anyone have or know anyone who is selling a cheap run-about car (that has A/C)?

Any pointers, please get in touch.
Thanks,
Ben

Cheap is a relative term

This 1973 Type 3 (Chassis 3132063403) is said to be original and rust free with 53k miles. A lifelong California car, it belonged to the original owner until 2013. It’s recently received attention from a VW master mechanic including shocks, brakes, and an engine tune-up. Like many survivors belonging to little old ladies, this one is an automatic, but the apparently good condition goes a long way to make up for it. Find it here on eBay in Santa Maria, California with no reserve beyond an $8,900 opening bid.

This 1988 Scirocco looks very clean and is said to be garaged, well maintained and retain its original paint. 17” BBS wheels are a bit too big and a bit too polished, but we’d sell them along with the aftermarket pinstriped taillights in order to partially fund some teardrops rims, Euro bumpers, and manual swap. Said to have working A/C and no mechanical issues, Bilsteins, poly bushings, sway bars and a big cam are all nice upgrades. Find it here on Craigslist in Sonoma, California for $6,999.

This 1984 300TD wagon (VIN 1231931F027296) is offered by its second owner and has recently undergone a long list of work including new paint, exterior trim, axles, master cylinder, water pump and more. A Euro market car, it retains attractive slim bumpers but has had USDOT lights fitted—we’d add Euro items to complete the look. It’s said to be rust free, includes service history from new, and looks just as nice inside as out. Find it here on Craigslist in Palos Verdes, California for $8,900.

Thanks David, that's kind of you.

You might want to rent a car from these folks:

That 458 Italia would be fun for three months.

That's quite a fleet. We are staying in Beverly Hills. Definitely worth dropping by that place to kick some tires and thoroughly waste their time.

Interesting stuff there Stan though I think that Scirocco would be vastly improved with a set of original wheels. I do like the Scorpion (in this country it's called a 'Monte Carlo' and it has way different lights). Kind of more than I want to spend. We just need a kind of throw-away car. The plan is to buy a reliable beater, then sell it and hopefully recoup some money but no biggie if we end up giving it away.

Bring a trailer has a 79 528 with AC for $5,500.00. Fly into SFO and drive down the coast.

Still looking ...

Thanks Tierfreund but $85k is a bit out of my range.

Looking to spend $2000. It's hard to find anything that's suitably nimble and fun whilst not being a complete wreck but I'm determined to find something. I'm quite enjoying the search.

If anyone does know of something in or around North Hollywood, please do get in touch.

a bit uncomfortable perhaps. But staying with the BMW theme.
And it´ll get you anywhere fast.

I might have a line on an early 80s VW Golf in OC, reportedly in very nice condition, for a $couple thousand, iirc. Let me know if want me to see if still available. Paul
