Well... it's been 6 years since my father Art passed away, and I've decided it's time to re-home his beloved and (almost famous) coupe.

The car is named "Ilse" and she was the light of my father's life for just about 40 years. I carried his ashes along with my mother (Helen's) ashes on one last drive with the car. To say that it was emotional is an understatement.

She's traveled from FL to ME, CO, and elsewhere...and was driven every single goddamned day by my father (former head of the coupe registry in the 1990s-2000s), unless there was salt on the ground in PA.

Complete 1972 3.0CSi with over 300,000 miles on it (probably!) KM Odometer hasn't worked since 1986 or so.

Located 40 miles north of Pittsburgh PA, stored at my vintage BMW shop in Portersville PA.

Asking $68,000 USD but open to offers.

Engine could use freshening up, but the car runs and drives superbly overall. I am always amazed when I fire her up and decide to cruise backroads in her.

New exhaust
New-ish calipers, hoses, etc
Very nice original interior
windows all work
non sunroof car (manual front windows, power rear)
4 speed manual gearbox shifts well
new-ish driveshaft
complete (!) tool kit including feeler gauges and blue BMW shop towel.
tool box is brand new
rear shock towers reinforced about 35 years ago
Bilsteins
larger front sway bar
re-sealed intake and timing cover, along with crankshaft sprocket and (if I remember correctly?) a new oil pump in 2017
oil pan gasket obviously done as well.
Engine seems to remain leak free.

Some rust that hasn't gotten worse in the 40 years my father owned her, but it hasn't gotten better either.

Rust on triangular rear subframe mounting points
Poorly repaired inner fender structures in front (inside wheel well)
Some long deep scratches from parking lot incidents
"smoothed out" engine bay upper contours...which is disappointing.
I believe that the rocker panels (ALL 3 LAYERS) were replaced with OEM sheet metal and properly repaired about 25 years ago as well.

Believe the color scheme (Polaris stripe over fjord) to perhaps be original special order, but no way to tell.

Those of you that have been in the game 30 or 40 years will probably know this car.

She's a DRIVER and she needs someone to keep driving her. I am not that person. The car has become an altar to my father who remains a giant to me.

clutch has never needed service in the 40 years he owned it and gearbox has never been of the car, nor has the block. Head rebuilt 36 years ago and has a mild Schrick cam.

Injection intact and works well, though it could use a tune up by someone well versed in this type.

It is with heavy heart that I must part with Ilse, and I will cry ugly UGLY tears when she leaves... but she needs to be owned by someone that will love her and drive her.

Someone that appreciates what she is... and forgives her for what she isn't.

All for you doing this, for your description; for your Dad, whom I never met but had many a conversation with, sometimes cranky conversations (both sides), but always seriously intelligent swashbuckling - you were/are a lucky man, Paul, and this cannot be easy, but we all understand.

For anybody who does not know Paul, you can take his description to the bank; it will be exactly as described.

Paul, your dad and I corresponded and talked on the phone for decades. He was so kind, generous and curmudgenly all at the same time. In the days of the Paper Registry or was it the Register, who cares, we enjoyed rousing the troops with our FDR liberalism. When I did CSRegister badge and license plate frame runs he lent me each. Sold a couple of hundred badges over two runs, shipped all over the world. What fun it was. We also did a run of decals, but I don't know if Art created them or we thought them up. No matter, they adorned the rear windows of many a coupe. All at cost.

I don't do emojis, don't even know how to spell the word. Is it a word? And Pete, you are right, LOVE is the word. And I would add, Peace and Love with the peace sign.

I propse Dirk open a BMWCCCA museum and your dad's car will be its first acquisition.

Do you guys realize how special this coupe is!!! Those really were the days my friend.

I understand & appreciate the tough decision to sell Ilse. Fond memories of Art at the PVGP.
May Isle find the proper home.

Similarly, sold a car I loved dearly which went to a good home.

The last time I talked with Art was at the PVGP, the last time BMW was the featured marque. He was not in great shape then but that personality still shone through. I remember that Fjord stripe from several events back in the day -- the only two-tone I have ever seen. Both Art and the car are icons of the hobby. Like the Blue Max, I sure hope this goes to a worthy custodian.
