I was watching a story on PBS where they met with some of the residents who have lost everything. In some cases their insurance was cancelled by major insurers and had to get coverage from the California Fair plan. That covers the building, but no contents coverage, which will be huge financial hit.

That covers the building, but no contents coverage, which will be huge financial hit.
The part about not being able to open the garage because of no electricity seems like a drama enhancing plot twist. Every idiot knows garage doors can be opened manually and they are balanced to not be even heavy.
