Today I'm doing yard work in the Las Vegas heat.. pulling weeds and other general repairs to help my father-in-law maintain his property in Henderson.. and I need a few things so I hop in the Subaru and zoom off.. and then the lightbulb goes off in my head...
You see, a few years ago, I was doing exactly the same thing... pulling weeds and driving to the hardware store when I blew past this giant auto shop called Atomic Motors. The place really grabbed my attention, so I grabbed a hall pass and stopped by one afternoon.. they were incredibly cool and took on a tour of the entire shop.. engines, fabrication, electrical, upholstery and paint.
Yup. I took a detour and stopped in at Atomic to see what was cooking... yo, check this out... Atomic Motors has one of the seven original Shelby Daytonas and it's going through restoration right there in the showroom. The owner was super cool and let me snap a few shots..
The first photos three are the Daytona.. fully stripped and polished to 50k grit in preparation for a new candy blue paint job with white strips. The english wheel hand-formed aluminum body was just beyond amazing.
The 4th photo is a modified billet suspension they installed into an original 427 cobra - 427 cobras have a frame built from 4" diameter pipe (black). I'm pretty sure I've seen this car at Laguna Seca; they said it was a track car.. something to look forward to in August.
Finally, I got lucky in 2023 (red) and 2024 (blue) at Laguna Seca.. some of the other Daytonas were on exhibit.
As I was wrapping things up, I inquired about a few future things: re-upholstering my E21 Recaros, chrome plating and hot dip.
The owner mentioned Ogden Chrome:
Atomic Motors:
Finally, check out that nifty Snap-On hydraulic lift. Super compact and perfect for those of us who live in SoCal stucco boxes with single car garages. I think I see one in my future supporting my Bavaria project.
What a Tuesday. Rally on my friends!
