I have decided to do this in stages starting with the console.Does anyone have pictures or ideas on cutting out wood and replacing with shift boot. Thanks in advance,Tim.

Thanks Ande
I have seen that photo but was hoping for more detail on what to do or Not to do.I plan on over sizing a little just so I don't have to reopen after installing tranny. Thanks

IIRC the console work is all from inside the car so you don't have to do much of anything from underneath if the shifter is connected to the shift platform and horizontal shift rod.

When I did my 265 conversion I got a shifter surround from a parts car... but it wouldn't be difficult for someone with modest wood tools and skills to cut the wood to replicate the flat section. I may eventually do this since the fit is not what it oughta be.

For the shifter surround I took some vinyl in a color more or less matching my interior (a sort of tan) and made a conical piece using the wife's sewing machine. Warning: most sewing machines are barely up to piercing two layers of vinyl; your significant other will be majorly PO'd if her machine is outa whack because you overstressed it! I stapled my home-made vinyl surround into place on the wood and at the appropriate elevation, then cut off the tip of the cone for the shifter to poke through. It's starting to deteriorate, many years after I made it but I'm happy it has lasted this long. I'll make another, better one when I need to.

AGLA (Alan Gunn Leather Accessories) used to sell leather shifter surrounds, are then still around?

Love it Honolulu
Not to many guys can run a sewing machine!I myself made snowboard pants 33 years ago by taking apart an old pair as a pattern and using Gore-Tex material to make a pair to match my North Face coat. This year one of the ski resorts is hosting a retro day so I dug them out and dang it they don't fit. That 20 lbs heavier is to much for the tailor fit look I used back then:)
I'm going to do the wood work and take it to a shop to make me a boot but that's all you did is staple it to the bottom after wrapping the material around the wood from the top?

here's the last two.

The shift pattern is a little bit wider on the 5-speed, and so the overall boot is slightly larger to accommodate the reverse throw than the 4spd opening.

this solution i would best describe as "serviceable", as I still need to fabricate a more proper ring to hold the shift boot. Currently it just sinks into the opening, and looks a bit odd. perhaps a carrier ring from a later model BMW with a 5-speed may work?

-Good luck!

no prob, i used a factory shift boot (i like the zipper look), but it did need a bit of a stretch to attach it to the larger opening.
