Auto to Manual Conversion

Hi Guys, I have the opportunity to buy a complete M30 and 4 speed gearbox on my local auction site. Just wondering how difficult the swap from auto to manual is? I have a 1973 3.0CS automatic. Obviously I'll need a clutch pedal assembly but are the drive shafts the same length and does the harmonic balancer at the front of the engine need to be changed? Any info would be greatly appreciated, I've done a manual conversion in an E30 before but have no experience with converting an E9. Thanks

You may want to consider the 5 speed conversion, not allot of folks going with the 4-speeds and I think the technical information Bo references is geared mainly toward 5-speed conversions, Also, no other mods necessary from the flywheel forward.

yea try and find an 86 535i with overdrive its really great on thew freeways
1 toi 1 gearing

see if you can find the 535i w/ overdrive great on the freeway 1 to 1 gearing and i used the rear brace from the automatic
it worked perfect a a slight slant or you can redrill

To be clear- an overdrive (OD) tranny from 1986 5 series is not 1 to 1 gearing.
The point of an overdrive is to change the gearing about 20% for better cruising.
Furthermore- the 1986 5 speed tranny has no speedo drive making it undesirable for a swap.
