Automatic e9 Flywheel Compatibility

Hi, all. First time poster. I'm having my old 1973 e9 automatic BorgWarner Transmission rebuilt, and the service rep tells me that the teeth are gone on my old Flywheel. So it needs to be replaced. The only problem is that it seems nearly impossible to find even a used one online, so I'm wondering if these are compatible with the ones found on newer models. BMW made the inline-six engine through the early '90s, so I suspect that there are compatible flywheels/flex plates out there that aren't necessarily marked as compatible. Thank you for any light that you can shed. -Steve

Unless you’re only considering used they still appear to be available new.

RealOEM says later e23 & e28 M30 AT flywheels (to 1987) fit the earlier models but not visa-versa. (I thinks that’s what.
“nonexchangeable retrospectively” means.

I would give Carl at LaJolla Independent a call. He’d know for sure and may have one.

Thanks for all of this, John! I reached out to BMW Parts Deal a couple of days ago and found out that they don't actually have the part. It appears they are part of a larger network that searches for parts after an order is placed. I'll definitely look into e23 and e28 flywheels and reach out to Carl at La Jolla Independent. I forgot about him, but have reached out to Coupe King in Wilmington. I haven't heard back yet from him yet. Thanks again!

Send an email to Al Taylor ([email protected]). I bought two transmissions and a bunch of other parts from him.

He may have the correct flywheel for you, and if he doesn't, he likely will know which flywheels are compatible.
Thanks. I talked to Carl earlier today, and he told me that he "might" have one that fits the BorgWarner automatic tranny. I asked him if either of the e23 or e28 flywheels would work, and he said neither were compatible. I assume the ZF transmission is the one that's compatible with other motors, but I don't know for sure. He took my number, and I assume he will call back soon. Still waiting to hear back from the Coupe King. Fingers crossed that one of these shops has one that will work. I'll report back when I know more. Thanks, all!
