Hi all -
I have a '71 Bavaria (2800) with a bad ZF 3HP20 (won't go into reverse or third, did a bunch of troubleshooting on this thing already with suggestions from Don). I acquired a 3HP22, but it has a couple differences I don't feel like dealing with - namely the oil cooler tubing, and oil filler tube/dipstick (it did not come with one). Not sure how to handle the oil cooler lines, so I thought it may be best to find the same transmission I already have. Therefore my question is, does anyone have a 3HP20 they want to part with? (in the northern CA area, preferably). I know I missed SFDon's 'transmission giveaway' a few weeks back, so I am hoping for some good luck at this point. I welcome any suggestions...
Thanks!
Larry

when my 2002 wouldn't go into reverse, I took off the output flange, then the rearmost casting. In that casting is a piston that needs to slide up and down in its groove without hanging up. I used crocus cloth to smooth both the piston and bore, reassembled, and WALLAH I got reverse back. Sold the car for $500 after beating on it for a couple months. This was, obviously, many years ago and the car had cosmetic blemishes aplenty.

OTOH when the CS did the same thing, I put in a 4-speed. Later a 5-speed. Reverse always worked on both those trannies, I still have the old trans, but there will be some shipping costs... LMK

Rob: I was just hoping to take the path of least resistance on this car since I am working on an engine build for my coupe, so thought swapping the same type would be easiest. (and the 4HP22 would actually be cool too - thanks for the link). However, I have considered a conversion to 5 speed except they are getting harder to find. But, I do have a 4 speed here, so I was considering putting that in and then later on switch to a 5 speed if one crossed my path (and then dealing with the driveshaft, etc.). Since the 4 speed is shorter than the 5 speed, I assume I would not need to mess with the driveshaft for that?

Charlie: Thanks for the tip on that, I have read about that part of the transmission, and seems like it is something I can access without too much hassle. As far as your 4 speed swap, see my last question above. Was the 4 speed a direct swap for the auto, in terms of driveshaft, etc.? I guess I would just need to get a whole new pedal box? Not even sure where to start with that, although I do have Carl Nelson's write up on the swap.

Thanks guys!
