After having had a BMW 2002 for the last 46 years and refreshing six over the last seven years I decided to start looking for a E9 coupe project. After a few months of talking with friends my buddy Mike Pugh told me about a dry 71 2800 Baikal Blue With white interior that had been sitting for fifteen years in North Carolina that was coming up for sale, After reviewing pictures and working up a tentative price on April 7 My wife and I loaded up the car trailer and headed to North Carolina give it a look over in person…pleased with what I saw we went ahead and made the purchase.
The start to getting it going again started as We removed the fuel tank Packed it up and send it to company In Houston that specializes and fuel tank renovation, They cut two holes in the tank to sandblast the interior /resealed it and coated the inside… after receiving it back and reinstalling the fuel tank in the car it ran like a champ With a few issues to be addressed, we replaced the differential hanger/replaced rubber boots of half shafts/adjusted the valves/repaired oil leak at valve cover caused by two striped out bolt holes…
after driving the car a few months and over three thousand miles I decided to start the refresh…
the goal to refresh and be finished in a year are less…started to disassemble first week of November going to glass bead blast to metal December 13 / remove & fill in holes at side reflectors and repaint Bailak blue / change the interior to red leather and install a rebuilt 3.5 engine / a five speed
