BAT daily E9 CS (European project ) offering

The seller of this car purchased my CSL from me in 1993 which I recently bought back from him last year. A real, long term e9 and Porsche enthusiast (and general great car guy). Represented accurately and with no reserve. Has there even been a no reserve auction for an e9 yet?

Does the rust look manageable to you?

What's manageable? It's all manageable with a big enough wallet and skilled people. Having said that, it looks a lot better than many and with the spare parts, in a great color and euro details, it will make someone a nice car... And I have a dogleg 5-spd that would slide right in there to replace that autotragic ;-)

Rockers and floors is a must. And rear quarter panel work for sure, which can get REAL expensive since no one makes full quarters.

If front inner and bulkhead are rusty, then we're seeing another $50k paint/body work requirement.

You've just described 75% of the coupes in existence...

Let’s keep in mind that this car looks presentable on the outside. It is quite feasible to patch the floor and just enjoy the car as is. Someone that has become a socially unacceptable option despite many members here doing just that.

This picture highlights the need for a w&n lower quarter patch panel. I see the quarter is rusted through and the end cap for the rocker is visible. Those are available also. You can only infer that the center rockers are a problem but the outer rockers could have some rust near the drain holes. I see people doing the inner rockers online, but I haven’t encountered a rusty coupe in person that appeared to need a full inner rocker replacement. This auction comes with the parts. My guess if anybody who took on this work would cut the leading and trailing end of new the inners, and patch them in to otherwise good original rockers.

There is no doubt that this car wouldn’t benefit by a bare metal restoration. There are signs of filler honestly photographed. It would be feasible to go after parts of this car without respraying the whole body. I would be happy to drive this car as-is personally.

Those tar pads don't look factory and really should be torn off to assess the condition of those strut towers:

No doubt the buyer will do that! Every out-of-state purchase is a gamble and it is unreasonable to expect sellers to take their car apart during a sale (no matter how many times you ask :D). Now if I were selling one…

Teahead is correct, I'll scrape them off and post more images to the auction... also clear shots of the front inner fenderwells which are super clean.

And thanks for the kind words, Tyson. I'm pleased #177 has the future where it belongs. Last time I posted here was to sell two 2000 CS's. In 2009.

Regarding the sheet metal included, when I restore cars I don't patch, so I bought everything needed expecting the worst when peeling back the ugly.
Whoever takes this project on is welcome to their own approach. I like to think of the package deal as a BMW E9 Resto-Kit™

I bought this car as a daily for my wife fifteen years ago, and we used it without a single issue for about ten, then basically parked it while other stuff was underway.
It's the fifth in a long string of E9 beaters going back to 1985, and we've also had two 2000CS coupes, a 2000C and a swell 3.0Si. The CSL I bought from Tyson was
never used as a street car, at least not often, mainly because it was so clean cosmetically but also because it's wasn't particularly comfortable the way I prepped it.
This one was going to be the keeper... we love baikal, has a sunroof + slushbox cruising for our golden years. But we have several other classics in our modest fleet,
and I've completed seven (7!) full, bare shell restorations in the last ten years. I'm past 65, retired, and really don't have the will to do another to my usual standards.

Buy well-finished is now my mantra. Don't know why it took so long to figure it out, currently my second 914/6 GT is sucking up all resto energy and $$$.

Even though I had fully intended to do this coupe right, we made the decision and hope it finds a good home.

I'm kind of surprised by the lack of activity for this auction, not sure how I could be more transparent about the car.

Maybe I shoulda rattle-canned everything, sprayed ArmorAll all over the place and really turned up the contrast in the pics... ;)

The reality is, we'll soon see the market value of a relatively clean no-reserve CS is. Will that data be reflected in Hagerty's graph?

I see green paint in various photos .. and 35 and 39 show rust on or near the boot gutter lip (under the rubber seal), which I would think is tricky to remediate as you can't very well replace the panel. The rest of the paint looks good and fresh, so one has to wonder about the prep. And the paint probably has to go anyway, by the time you do the rear quarters, rockers, doors, rear clip ...

Yes, both the rear rubber gutter and the front are perforated in a couple of spots. Fabrication of replacement patches isn't difficult.
If by green you mean the shock tower tops after removal of the bogus tar sheets? Discoloration, apparently. The driver's side clearly has some rust.

EDIT: I see the green you're talking about... looks like primer, most evident around the rear seat support. Love that tar application. ;^/
Paint looks remarkable considering it's age, but yes, in my opinion this car should be totally stripped and on a rotisserie.

The rear lower quarters aren't a complicated shape, wonder why BMW Tradition (or somebody) doesn't make them?

Seems like a good buy ... but you are looking at complete body resto say $20K, complete interior say $5K, and probably a lot of mechanical say another $5K. And then you have an automatic .. Hopefully the buyer is handy.

A great paint job without bodywork is $20K, you can’t do a decent interior for only $5K, add in all of the chrome/trim/rubber seals, it gets rather large very quickly.
