I was getting ready to put some of Luis' jewelry on my coupe and i noticed that the battery ground was a long cable that went to the engine block (but not to the frame). i have a vague recollection of a battery ground cable either from my e12 or e28 that was a double braided cable that went from the battery to the frame and another to the engine (this was a long time ago).

so my question is ... is there a reason that the ground needs to go directly between the battery and the engine on the engines with an ECU or can i make it more period correct and ground the engine to the firewall and the battery to the frame?

I don't have FI but besides my cable going from the batt to the frame I also ran a decent gauged black wire from the cable clamp to the alternator case that is pretty stealthy, perhaps an option?

yes

is the answer. Three main grounds- body, block- actually motor mount, and cylinder head near the driver rear.
