I think i know who this car belongs to. Met him once brielfy. If its the same car, it was in the shop the day before mine to have some minor touch up work done. I spoke to the shop owner about it and he said its in very nice condition and that he's seen it many times over the years - always been in good shape with no major issues (rust or otherwise). Assuming its the same guy (and i think it is) i could look it over for anyone who might be interested.
 
Put a price on it

Did I miss the price listed somewhere? Can't handle ads like that. No pics, "no rust", "concours winner". Will it take $10K or $50K to get me to the dance? Giving the owner the benefit of the doubt, he's probably an OK guy...but I can't help but feel he's fishing....These would be my thoughts as a prospective buyer.

Bimmerboy - if this is the one (i.e. John and 2800 cs) I think it is it is owned by a cardiologist (good - he has the money to fix things) who used to be my neighbor when I lived in Bolton Hill. He never struck me as a car guy (although he obviously has good taste) and certainly not the Q-tip type (but who knows?) - he may have bought it after it won the awards. If this is the same car, he gets it serviced where I do (Dave's Autobahn at Stevenson and York). Did you see it at Daves or at a body shop (who do you use?)? When talking about it Dave never mentioned it had issues, but we only had a casual conversation. I never got a really good look at it. I know he drove it regularly.

Not sure if its the same car/owner you are thinking of or not. It left the shop about 5 minutes before i brought my car in (at Classic Car Shop off of Falls). I'm pretty sure i met the owner (John) at an e28 gathering on Roland Ave. He said he lived in the area and was out for a walk so i think he's in Roland Park. Pete Jones @ Classic Car Shop did say that there was another 'well to do' owner in the area that brought his car into his place a few times but he hadn't seen him in a while so was assuming he sold it. I also know that John got his car serviced at Blueridge on Union Ave but that doesnt mean he didnt go to Autobahn. Blueridge is where i take the e28 and the coupe ( and i hope to take the e86 there when its off warranty). Havent been to Autobahn but i heard its a decent shop. Might give them a shot one day.

In talking to Pete about it he said he thought it was a really nice car. It was in to have a very minor rust repair done in prep for sale. He said the only negative mark would be the paint since it was a respray and was showing its age a little - still nice though. Solid otherwise.


I havent seen the car in person so i cant confirm any of this but Don at Blueridge pretty much said the same thing about it a while back when he was telling me about all of the coupes he'd seen in his shop over the years.

This John does live in Roland Park and he may well have taken his e9 to some other shops. I haven't actually seen him except in passing since we both moved.

Would Classic Car know enough about e9s to disassemble (and more importantly reassemble) the wood around the guages? I have a nice replacement piece but am not sure I have the patience, skill, time, or small enough fingers to take this all apart and get it back together.

We obviously share the same taste in cars - e9, e86 (is yours Interlagos blue? - saw one on the beltway months back - not too many e86s in Baltimore) and e24/e28.

A Baltimore e9 get together is still on my to do list.

I'll ask Pete tomorrow if he can handle an interior wood trim job. I'm heading up to pick up the coupe... hopefully. He knows the bodies VERY well having done several over the last few years. He said he had a pretty solid run of coupes for a good while a few years back after getting hooked up with Paul who was one of the original guys at Maximillian Importing. Paul used to work at Blueridge and apparently directed all of his coupe and 02 friends to Pete. This has been my first experience with Classic Car but from what i hear they are top notch and know the e9 well. I guess i'll see firsthand tomorrow.

We should definitely put together a Baltimore vintage gathering. It would be nice if we could network with the other local vintage groups and put together something like a cars&coffee event. I'd bet there are a few e28, e24 and 02 guys who'd want to do it and i've seen a bunch early 911's buzzing around town. Its the kind of thing that could catch on quickly. We could call it Kegs&Klassics... a little more apropros for Baltimore :-)

forgot to mention - My Z is Stratus Grey:

...but i did see an interlagos MCoupe downtown about 2 weeks ago and a space grey coupe on the beltway maybe 2 months ago. Other than at the dealerships (a few years ago), those are the only 2 e86's i've seen on the road. Plenty of e85s around though. There are about a half dozen or so e28s around that i see on a fairly regular basis. theres also a pretty nice e24 driven by someone at Hopkins U. I see her occasionally pulling out of the garage behind the BMA (professor maybe?). I was shocked when she pulled up beside me and gave me and the e28 a smile and a thumbs up one day.
 
I spoke with the owner

Very nice guy. It seemed clear that he has been very diligent with maintenance, and the car looks super clean. About the only thing you could pick at is the color change from dark green to black was an exterior color change. You can still see the green in the engine bay (which is fairly grubby).

If you want a really nice 2800 and were willing to strip the engine bay and trunk to finish the color change ... you'd have an awfully nice car. Not a rotisserie restoration, but a super clean well sorted car that would do well in any concours that only judges the exterior and vehicle interior.

I decided to pass because I realized I want a 3.0 with original color scheme. This car is too nice to strip and take back to the original green.
