BMW special tool 7003-1

This is the tool that is used to depress all the rocker arms at once to facilitate easy removal of the camshaft. I've searched the forum at length and done a general search for this tool and have come up empty. I know there is/was an alternative available at one time. Does anyone know if this tool can be purchased or if not, a set of plans for making one?

I know there are some alternative methods for removing the cam from a M30 head using home made tools but there have been so many times over the years I've wished I had the real thing. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I sent two off to Sweden last year. One for the s38 and an m30 variety. Aka iron maidens. I tried to sell it here but no takers. I still have one for the 4 cylinder.

If you search this forum for iron maiden you will find buzzbomb may have one for rent.

I remember seeing the images last year and either I didn't realize they were for sale or just blew it. I sent you a PM regarding the four cylinder tool.
 
Me thinks the tools are rare compared to the car. There were a lot fewer dealer/mechanics than drivers then and now.
The s38 tool was new in box and the m30 tool was close behind. I regret selling them even though I had an offer I couldn't refuse, I needed the money and got it. I will have my garage done this summer and can finally haul some of the tools out again. Like we say in the software biz...RSN..real soon now..implies long wait....:twisted:

I will head over to the pm department....
 
Reviving this old thread. After spending a few evenings gently fussing with the idea of removing the cam without the special tool, I feel the tool (7003, aka iron maiden) is very beneficial. I've searched for one and it seems more rare than hen's teeth. I'm considering making one similar to Jean Luc, but before I do does anyone have a trick that allows for removing the cam without damage? Is there a MacGyver solution using chewing gum and paper clips?

EDIT: Just found some info over on the myE28 forum. Sounds like I can focus on getting the rocker shafts out first - in a specific order - and then follow that up with removing the valves. The cam should be free and clear at that point. Please let me know if I'm off base.

Take it to a head shop.
Tell him you want to watch.
video on your cell phone.
now you know the right way.

you need exact diameter rod to hammer out the shafts.
do it wrong and you will ruin stuff.

I have done dozens, now I pay to do it

Ha ha, you have a point. Don't they charge extra when you watch?

I respectfully have to go another direction. I haven't done dozens, and feel I need to do mine. It is a right of passage. And this disassembly is not rocket science. Plus, this is not California. I am in the midwest where most head shops only see small block chevy parts. ;) What scares me most is when I take a 37 year old head in and some young guy that doesn't know what their doing ruins it. Of course, I'll take it to the machinist to resurface and do the valve seats, etc. But I will manage to strip it one way or another.
