Hello,

Looking for the impossible, ac compressor shaft seal kit 64521356345 for Bosch/Nippondenso axial compressors... I see people rebuilding these compressors and wonder where they're finding these parts... Unless there are modern equivalents out there that I don't know about...

I can't be the only guy wanting to keep the original compressor and not caving to the Sanden 508 conversion... This is by far a superior compressor that will outlast a Sanden 508, with the only problem being spare parts!

You're absolutely correct. The lower models at the time such as the E21 came with this compressor on rare occasions with a much more desirable compact, lightweight aluminum mounting bracket as opposed to the York piston compressor and boat anchor steel mounting bracket that the vast majority of US E21 models had installed once they arrived in the states. Much colder air and higher efficiency with less drag on that poor little 1.8 liter engine on the E21 from 1980 - 1983 with this Bosch or ND setup.
 
Sadly, Jay is no longer working on these; guess he is out of parts.
Don't know if Bosch Classic might have an answer (or leads) of if anyone has Nippondenso contacts.
Sent email to them but no answer.

(At one time the wingcell type were being "rebuilt" with polished carbon and faceplate but apparently not an exact process as very high comeback issues.)

I did take a locked up one apart and removed the carbon seal assembly but haven't had the time to go to an AC rebuilder/supply house and try to match.
Is carbon still the state of the art or are there now UHMW plastics, Delrin or other materials being used (ceramics?).
Any of the group into HVAC intricacies?

Apart from the carbon seal and corresponding metal rubbing surface, the latter is externally sealed to case with O-ring and the former sealed to shaft with another O-ring. Those would be easy to source.

Thanks for your reply and information... Is your last photo 7 777 574 the same as the original 64521356345? I have never taken one of these apart, so I have no idea what the original carbon seal looks like...

If you get a chance to go to a HVAC place, I am sure that many here would be grateful for your findings, including myself...
 
Photos are all of same dissembled compressor so should match the BMW part number
Taking a wild guess that the Bosch-ND was "inspired" by or shares design features with the earlier GM A6 compressor, I note that the A6 used a carbon seal rubbing against a ceramic rather that steel face. The later GM seal such as on R4 and RAs is a double lip seal which apparently forgoes the carbon vs ceramic seal altogether, relying on a double lip riding on a presumably pristine and play-free compressor shaft. BMW uses this design on some cars. Superior in use or less expensive to produce? I also see steel seal kits available which seems odd (yes, less expensive) - did Bosch-ND get it right the first time?
Tempted to order a cheap GM kit and take comparative measurements

Just remember that the shaft seal on an A6 compressor is designed to seep oil. It the nature of the beast. GM always said that if it leaked oil but not a measurable amount of refrigerant, it was normal.
You can replace it with a modern, double lip neoprene seal as long as there is minimal play/wear in the compressor shaft. It's worth a try if you want to keep your A6.
