I am having issues with my brakes. Any help is greatly appreciated!
They were pulling to one side. I did some work pulling is gone, will stop, but now:
Peddle goes down much lower than before.
Idle raises when I push the pedal down.
It won't pump up basically. Not spongy though.
Master cylinder rebuild?
Replace Booster?
Non return valve?

Idle goes up as pedal is pushed because you are creating a vacuum leak to the carb

Simplest place to start is to evaluate check valve between the carbs/intake and the booster.

The check valve and his hold vacuum. I am thinking the booster has failed.

That looks good. Could be booster, of course, but before you seek another booster, look closely at the other hose that connects from the check valve to the booster. If you see cracks or missing clamps or whatever, investigate whether some hose work might fix your issue.

Another thought, again before spending the money on a booster, is to re-assemble the parts you tested and see if the problem persists. It is possible that by removing and reinstalling that hose you may have fixed the problem.

Yet another thought is to try a simple "cover the carb" test. How precisely you do this depends on your carb setup, but the idea is to remove the air cleaner/filter, and use your hand to cut off airflow to one inlet at a time. For example, if you have dual webers cup your hands over one of the carbs. Each time you do this, your idle should slow and the engine will run rough. If the engine continues to idle normally, you have a vacuum leak that is not in the booster but that is also causing the booster to fail to fill properly. This is something of a long shot as a vacuum leak like this would cause other problems, but its cheap and easy, so worth a try.

Yes, you are right ! that is my next step.

I hooked the pump to the booster and pumped it up some (5-7times) and though it did not read, it did hiss when I pulled the hose off. I will try again tomorrow and pump it up more and see if it holds and If I can get the vacuum gauge to read.

.

Booster holds vacuum. However, if I depress the bake pedal the smallest, smallest amount the pressure drops to 0 instantly.

My thoughts are that the booster is failing? I am not sure about this one. Thoughts?

I didn't see anywhere how the brakes feel while you're using them? Does the car stop like always did or does it act like you don't have a booster working? The booster in my E3 is not working and there is no doubt about it.

Car pulled to one side and you "did work". What did you do?

Were the issues you describe now present the whole time or only after you fixed the pulling?

You appear to have a tear.
Rebuild
I have fresh boosters at shop if you want to see how should work

I believe White Post Restorations in VA will rebuild our boosters.

Or, I have a booster if you haven't already sourced one, but the one I have is thinner than yours and would provide less assist than what you are used to. I changed to a tii booster to make room for my triple weber carburetor setup.

Thanks for the input !
Hey Don is there anyone local that you use to rebuild or.....do you have a rebuilt one for me ?:)

Hello, Here is a shop that can help you with your braking issues, good luck.

Thanks for the help everyone !

I got it out of the car, and am having Power Brake Exchange in San Jose do the rebuild. I ordered up new hoses, small bits....etc .

I would very much like to do this job only once !

It is very hard to not restore every part I see when working on it , but I my intention is to keep this as a functional... hopefully.....well preserved driver.

New booster and master installed. It took a lot of hours ....not that many dollars on parts though. Power brake exchange was good, the new master was ATE. small parts tubes and hoses, grommets etc. ECS tuning ....

Thanks to the many helpful folks who pitched in with knowledge and tips !
