Caliper o-rings, size and material?

I have disassembled and cleaned my front caliper which had at least one sticking piston. I think the bores are "clean enough" and the pitting is not significant.

W&N has caliper rebuild kit, orings and bolts, $65.90 including tax. I didn't get into shipping to Hawaii.

I would like to clean the bores better but am leery of splitting the caliper, having read much of the pro and con on this list. To avoid VAT, international shipping and time delay (though I read W&N are very prompt), I would like to source the bits closer to home, particularly since I'm in the middle of the pond.

The rebuild kit is applicable to some E3, E9, E12, E23, E24, E28 so I think I can get it locally. I see some discussion as to re-using the caliper bolts.

The orings are my concern: which size and material is correct?

I've had my calipers apart a couple of times, re-used the bolts and they work just fine. I bought some 143.34002 repair kits from Centric for about $10 a side.

I just rebuilt our front calipers and did split them and reused the bolts. Got new small orings from

http://www.pmbperformance.com/catalog.html

This firm are specialist in Porsche brakes. He sells the orings for ATE brakes very cheap. Also check out his do it your self rebuilding. I have rebuilt older 911 and 914 calipers many times and always split the halves, best way to get out the pistons and clean the bores.

I have no interest in this company but they are well known in the Porsche world. Look at their work when they rebuild the calipers.

Hope this helps

the largest privately-held automotive parts remanufacturer in the world. Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, CARDONE now employs over 5,000 employees with additional facilities in California, Texas, Mexico and Canada.

And they rebuild coupe window motors......

Caliper rings.

Hi:
There is a source in Peabody Ma called King Kaliper. You should be able to find there info on line. They have all parts and also rebuild for about $75.
Good Luck

I would like to clean the bores better but am leery of splitting the caliper, .....

Keep in mind that disk brake caliper bores do not contact anything. It is the od of the pistons that must be clean and unpitted. The piston od contacts the id of the O ring in the caliper bore. The rest of the bore could be a rough casting.

So sure, you should get the bores as clean as possible. But unlike the id of a drum brake cylinder, the id of a caliper is not a sealing surface.

Thanks all for the tips.

As to buying someone else's calipers, I already have an old set - they were on the car.

As to jmackro's tip about the pistons, that's great news as the pistons are nice and clean, and will be buffed before reinstallation.

pmbperformance has quite a site with DIY videos, but all for Pcars. Still interesting to watch how the pros do it, but it was late and I fell asleep. I'll visit there again.

Now for a question: as I will have rebuilt the RF caliper, should I do the LF caliper also? I'll find out when I drive it next. Already missed a day of waves that I should have been all over. I can see it from the deck, six miles down the hill...

I spoke with Eric at PMB, who, as mentioned above, has rebuilt many hundreds (likely 1,000s) of ATE calipers such as ours, since they were widely used in Ferrari, Porsche and other period cars. They have re-used the bolts that many times with no adverse consequence.

I replaced those bolts and nuts that were available new from BMW or Walloth, but on the rear calipers, either the short or the long ones, I forget, are impossible to find so I reused them. They are an extremely odd size, either 7 or 9 mm. In the E3 at least, the rear caliper bolts have a Ribe style head which is like Torx but not exactly. You need to watch for damage or buy a Ribe bit if you plan on re-using them. They look like this;

I also have had several conversations with Eric at PMB and as long as the bolts are not rusted and there was never any evidence of other damage, they can and are reused. The manual says the fronts are torqued to 33-40 ft-lbs, rears 16. Eric recommends staying right at 33-35 as I spoke with him about these specific CS front calipers.

Also my fronts (2800cs non vented) have the Ribe style heads as do a set of front calipers I have from as 72CS (vented).

Anyone know if the rebuilt calipers mentioned for sale on Ebay say they always use new bolts?
Here is a description of the Cardone calipers from a vendor and it says they use OE seals and bleeder screws but does not say about the bolts. But as a previous post pointed out they are cheap and are ready to install.

I have a pair of rebuilt front calipers for your coupe, I sent these to UCI for rebuilding. I'll sell the pair for $150.00 plus freight. I also have a set of PBR metals (aka Repco Metal Master) pads for $57.00, I also have a set of Textar OE pads for $45.00. If this is of interest to you contact me at my e-mail [email protected].

Thanks DougE, and all who responded.

I don't have Ribe drivers, so I'll not be opening the calipers. I've given my middle finger quite a bit of exercise with the wet/dry sandpaper cleaning the bores "enough" and I'll leave it at that. Nice to have gone through the exercise and to know what is involved, and the availability of parts.

If, OTOH, my rebuild is not satisfactory when reinstalled (parts due in two days) I will certainly be back!
