Can't access my hood release

I have a related question: My 1973 3.0 CS has a keyed lock in place of the button release on this cover. I want to remove the lock and replace it with the button in order to provide rapid access to the engine compartment if needed. Is there a source where the button latch may be purchased? Is the conversion straightforward? Thanks!

Never seen a keyed lock in that location but at least if you have the key, it can be used to pull the door open when unlocked. I would prefer that over the stupid button. Two other thoughts:
1) Get a copy of the key from Santa Monica Lock and leave it in place or
2) Post a WTB for the door or latch and specifically ask for the knob rather than the button.

Thanks, I do have the key, and the latch works. I just see no reason to lock this compartment and was looking to make it faster to open, just in case of needing to access the underhood area quickly.

Not happy with the button, I'd leave the key.

Thank you for that. Good advice! My last E9, a 1970, 2800 CS had the button and it worked OK. I will stick with the key but I think I’ll just leave the key in the lock in case I need to open the hood. I’m always thinking about something like a fire that would need my attention quickly.

The only source for the original latch/button would be finding a good, used one. I don't believe those parts are being reproduced.

The conversion should be straightforward as long as the previous owner didn't enlarge the hole in the door, or otherwise mung things up (as previous owners are wont to do).

Most likely, the previous owner installed that key lock because the push-button either wasn't catching, or wasn't releasing - not to prevent crooks from stealing his battery. So if you put the correct latch back on, be prepared to fiddle with its adjustment.
