after 6 months of sleep I charged the battery and took the 73 for a ride it rode fine plenty of pep put a smile on my face. As I was leaving the grocery store at the light the car choked and cut off. Some young guys helped me pushed the car back off the street into a parking spot. By coincidence a car meetup was going on around me. The young guys were excited for me to open the hood of this 2002 or whatever it is. Now come class time I opened the hood and pulled off the air filter with just two nuts and viola two carbs. They all leaned in as I showed the car's simplicity. We took a hose a loose and I cranked no fuel came out. I showed were the fuel pump was and took the output side hose a loose and cranked the car again no gas.. My daughter picked me up and took me home and I took the fuel pump off of my 71 with a 3.3. I put it on my 73 at the parking lot and after some cranking the car started and ran well. By the way the bad fuel pump was only 2 years old.

Stock mechanical pump?

I changed to a Pierburg electrical pump, and I carry a spare fuel pump with me. I also installed the pump where I can access it laying on the ground and installed a set of pigtails so the electrical part of it is easy.

I like this idea, I need to work out the wiring, Did you use the rear defroster wires? did you put a block off plate where the old pump was?

I ran a completely separate wiring circuit, but I had installed a distribution block under the rear seat for my Schrott Harness inertial reels. I also installed a Revolution Electronics fuel pump controller, which is wired like a relay (with a safety circuit that shuts off the pump if the engine is not running).

Here is a description of my setup:

My pump is mounted on the right side, near the area where the tension strut attaches to the rear subframe using one of the bolts for the subframe mount. I had an area of crushed fuel line I removed there, and I was able to tuck the pump up where it is relatively well protected. If you look in the thread I reference, you can also see Macha's mounting location, which is in the trunk. I wanted to go lower to avoid vapor lock, but I don't think Chris has had any problems with his setup, and its easier to do than mine.

One last thing - yes I did install a block off plate. There is a BMW part for this. Don't recall where I got it.

i see Pierburg makes a couple of models any particular one? thanks

ok i reread your above input saw links thank you

Forgive me for asking; This may be obvious to others, but when installing the Revolution Electronics fuel pump controller...where under my Bavaria dash would I find the "tachometer lead" to connect the revolution's green wire?

lead?

I use the VDO lift pump from the early FI cars along with the fuel pickup and sender from an E28. I get them from the boneyard whenever I find one and have about 10 spares. I keep two spares pre-wired in my car, and it takes just a few minutes to change it out. I've only lost a couple of them in about 15 years.

Hi Mosearch - the tach signals in our cars come from the negative terminal of the ignition coil. I know the revolution instructions state that you should tap into the tach wire under the dash, but I dislike those wire taps. I instead ran my wiring to the coil.
