Car Seats

safety seats

Thanks, Erik, for sharing your professional experience. Part of my day job includes conducting training of professionals (law enforcement, docs, nurses, etc) to recognize and perform correct child safety seat installation and use. This is a much more complicated skillset than most parents recognize -- the training takes most of 4 days, with later updates to maintain certification. More than 3/4 of child safety seats in use have one or more significant misuse errors.

The only tip I would add to Erik's good data is to consider the age of our seat belts. If you're counting on your OEM belts to protect you, consider that webbing does deteriorate over time, not to mention degradation from fraying, improper cleaning, exposure to sunlight, stretching in a crash, etc.

And yes, when you're inspecting for rust (not that rust would ever be a concern for us), inspect belt anchor bolts and nuts carefully. Good belts are like good condoms -- you only need them to work once, but that one time is pretty important.
