Changing starter.

Continuing this thread, anyone installed a sr444x in a CSi?
Any problems with the solenoid hitting the water pipe under the intake?
I got it installed but it's pressing a little too much on the pipe, so I'm considering to find another solution.
Does all sr444x have this problem, or is it just my version of the sr444x that have this problem?

This is the one I got:

It cranks like three times faster than the very tired stock starter :D

Just did this today, here are the things I wish I had done right from the start instead of messing around
1. Remove the single manifold closest to the firewall. 4 bolts and gives a lot more room. I did not need to remove the next one over.
2. Ground down two wrenches before even trying. I spent a fair amount of time getting an s-wrench on there and then only being able to turn it 1/4 turn and struggling. The ground down wrenches were still obnoxious but worked. I used the longer wrench to start so that I could put a breaker bar over it t give me some leverage, then used the small wrench (with its head bent to make it effectively shorter) to get it the rest of the way off.
3. Shot Kroll on there the night before attempting this job. I did use it during the process but a few extra hours of penetration might have helped
4. Poured myself a glass of whiskey at the start to inspire me to finish the job. Or could drink it during to make the job seem a bit less onerous

3/8” drive, 17mm, stubby, thin walled universal socket sold by SnapOn

Every old BMW mechanic owns one.

Now do the smart thing- throw away those bolts and use studs with nuts.

@sfdon good to know on both counts - studs ordered and I'll change those out. Regarding the Snap-on, can you let me know which of the three options below is what you'd recommend for future forum members trying to tackle this job? I suspect it's the universal socket (#1) but I didn't see a specific low-profile or thin-walled one. I own a set of low-profile "Nano" sockets but still had trouble getting those around the starter housing, which is where the universal might have been handy. I do also have a universal set but not up to a 17. Now I know!
