As was pointed out recently, chrome fender grilles originally had black vertical supports. I painted mine black and love the look, before there was too much chrome showing.

are these easy to get off without damaging anything? maybe I could paint them in place
Be aware that they are difficult to remove ( especially if they’ve been in for so long ) without breaking the insert spikes.

I glued vacuum tube to the backs as these are new.
And while I am reassembling it only makes sense to touch other things that look OK but were showing their age. SEM Storm Grey and Ranger White.

I remember Carl or someone told me to use vacuum caps on the studs. Here I used thick rubber washers. The ones W&N sells are guaranteed to brake the studs.

That may explain my situ. I used W&N Fastening sets and 3 of my studs broke when i tried to remove the side grills.

I replaced my black grills with the chrome grills. They were installed with the W&N fasteners. I better not try to remove them. Chris--How did you paint the vertical posts?

I just sprayed some flat black into a cup and used a small brush. SEM Trim Black won’t work as it is too runny. No scuffing.
How do the vacuum caps work to avoid splitting the studs? Do they keep the screws from going as far into the stud as they would without the caps?
And if that's the case, are all existing grille trims destined to crack upon removal?

Slip the cap or in my case vacuum tube over the post and use a dab of adhesive.
They just slip on the studs, no screws.

Yes in lieu of a highly destructive speed nut.
I also adjusted the stops on the later style motors to lower the glass a bit.
Installed look like this, the nipply silicone things (can I say that?) next to the antenna base. Plus, I needled some black thread through the caps just to be sure. Belt and suspenders. Lose one once...never again.

Hey Chris- Nice detail with the chrome trim. Makes a great difference. For comparison, here's a couple with the stock chrome trim (still very nice).
