As was pointed out recently, chrome fender grilles originally had black vertical supports. I painted mine black and love the look, before there was too much chrome showing.
I remember Carl or someone told me to use vacuum caps on the studs. Here I used thick rubber washers. The ones W&N sells are guaranteed to brake the studs.I glued vacuum tube to the backs as these are new.

what is a vacuum cap?
They just slip on the studs, no screws. How do the vacuum caps work to avoid splitting the studs? Do they keep the screws from going as far into the stud as they would without the caps?
And if that's the case, are all existing grille trims destined to crack upon removal?

Installed look like this, the nipply silicone things (can I say that?) next to the antenna base. Plus, I needled some black thread through the caps just to be sure. Belt and suspenders. Lose one once...never again.Yes in lieu of a highly destructive speed nut.
