Yes. Can’t be converted either. Forced to do gps speedo.

Yes and no separate bell housing which isn’t a big deal plus I believe the 265 was regarded as a more rugged transmission.

Why is the 260 less desirable - no mechanical speedo gear?

Everyone kinda answered the question. It's not quite as tough as the 265, bmw switched to the 260. Then brought back the 265 a couple years later, good indicator they may have had too many warranty claims.
Now, it's probably fine in a couple if you don't focus on specs and drive normal.
