I am off on another preservation adventure........In the process I came across a great service provider that is E9 related.
Specialty Gauge to repair your E9 / E3 dash clocks.
The owner is Cory Shepard. He is highly responsive and did a great job repairing my non quartz VDO dash clock. Reasonable and super fast to ship.

$279 included parts and labor, plus shipping. His note on the invoice read ''replaced winding solenoid''. Shipped back to me in 3 days after the notice the repair was completed. Clock returned squeaky clean.

Looks like I’ll be sending mine in. Took out the clock and repaired it per the previous thread but when I attached it to 12V it ticked along for a minute or two and then began to smoke. The soldered connection broke apart (as I guess it is designed to do) and then this resistor looks burned. Now beyond my capabilities. Good to know about this resource

Adding another plug for Cory at Specialty Gauge, see above contact info. I sent in my clock last week, he got it Monday and has it fixed and ready to send out today, two days later. Price was about $260, with repair of solenoid noted. Other prices I had received for repair were about $400 from Seattle Speedometers and one other place.
For what it's worth, I had called around to a few places, had a quotation of $695 + shipping from Palo Alto, $895 from North Hollywood. In both of those cases they were planning to convert to a quartz movement. Advantage is longer-lasting, keeps better time, disadvantage is that it's not as period-correct and doesn't have the gently "click" of these older-style clocks. I asked Cory about that option and he said he can do quartz change-over for "about $580". So there you go, cheaper on both counts and great service.
