The E24 developed a scary clunking/rattle/friction noise on the right front, somewhat related to moving even at low speed and perhaps turning but got worse really quick. I put the car on the ramps to get under and see what could be, caliper, shock, steering, strut bearing, and nothing is visually wrong. I backed off the ramp by just releasing the hand brake and the driveway slope did the rest. The car hit much harder than I planned, but the clunk is gone! What could have been fixed by a hard vertical hit? Will the problem come back next time I hit a bump?

Arde, was the car jacked up before it made the noise? i know my last 2002, which had short springs, the springs would rotate slightly when the suspension was hanging. as soon as you drove it, the springs would get back to their original place and all was good.

No, the car has not been jacked up in a year. Here driving made it worse and dropping it fixed it. I drove a mile today and still good.

Not related to steering....the idler arm support is a weak point. I have also had the gland nut back off a bit which created a nice clunking noise.

The only additional clue is that the wheel (just that one) is unevenly worn (worn badly on the inside).
