Clutch issues

So as it usually goes I was chasing a bunch of issues on the clutch… bad master… bad hose etc. I have those sorted out now with a 320 master and a universal hose. BTW if you change to the newer master cylinder beware that your lovely hose you just bought for the early slave will be about two inches too short.

Car shifts fine and operates fine when driving. Having an issue on taking off and reversing. I get a judder or shaking when taking off in first. Also as the car warms up the throw out bearing get noisy when I have it out of gear and no pedal depressed.

Any ideas where to look? I’ve looked at the clutch lever etc through the fork hole… all looks okay I guess?

When I installed my 5 speed it had been sitting on a shelf for about 30 years, but had very low mileage when removed.

My first fill was a blend of 50% Redline MTL and 50% Brad Penn GL4 80/90. I had a fair amount of noise at idle, in neutral and the clutch out (not engaged). I did a gear oil change using just the Redline oil after about 1,000 miles and the noise went away.

The shudder or judder sounds like either pilot bearing/bushing or uneven flywheel surface.

It could also be just the new clutch bedding in. It suspect it takes a while for the clutch element and the pressure surfaces to get to know one another

Judder symptom? Although a worn or contaminated clutch plate might be the most likely culprit, I would not overlook other drive train components.

Consider double checking the integrity of the two motor mounts and - especially - the transmission cross member and rubber mount. If the surrounding rubber that supports the center driveshaft bearing is severely compromised, allowing too much movement, that might also account for what appears to be a momentary judder. If the rag joint/flex disc coupling, aka giubo, is cracked and/or significantly degraded, “judder” might be considered an early warning of an unfriendly surprise.

Your throw out bearing bearing (should be) sealed and otherwise unserviceable. You might be able to inspect it for any leaking grease, in which case, replacement is your only long term option. I hesitate to mention this, but depending the nature of the noise, if there is any obvious/abnormal wear pattern on the bearing surface that contacts the pressure plate fingers (or vice versa) that surface might benefit from a tiny smear of moly grease. Obviously, introducing grease in that vicinity heightens the danger of possible clutch contamination, ultimately degrading clutch operation. That said, it may work as a short term noise abatement - for worn components.

Brand new transmission mounts, new guibo and new flex coupler.

I considered that the clutch is bedding in.

My concern is… did Korman change the pilot bearing? They missed so many things I am concerned. It’s a pain but I may have to pull the gearbox. I do have a lift and a transmission jack… but it’s still a pain.

And possibly….diff mount. Often missed source of chatter.? Does it clunk at all.
I have a tiny momentary shudder very occasionally on very slow clutch release.
Worse in reverse.
Most of my driveline components are in compliance EXCEPT my diff mount has separated.
I’ll have the new diff mount in next week. And I’ll report back on the changes.
Good luck!

Diff mount is the old one… not in fantastic shape but I thought it was passable… everything is suspect.

Went out for a drive yesterday. Seemed better but something is still amiss.

Unfortunately the MGA is on the lift right now getting it’s transmission taken out for rebuild so I can’t get the BMW back up for a bit.
