Late Saturday night, post dinner party and a belly full of red wine. Log on to E9 and a thread mentions "code of ethics". Well......what is the " code of ethics"? How far does one stray to become guilty of a violation? Does one who chooses to stray really care?
Having written that I surprise myself, as one who has possibly strayed in the eyes of some, in thinking of what would be a step beyond acceptable? A V8 transplanted, supercharged, laughing gassed, i.e. NOSed, pogo suspensioned ( there's probably a term for this type of vehicular aberration but it is not in common usage where I come from ), 22 inch wheeled, bling encrusted, hot pinked pimpmobile, I'm guessing, has stepped over the line. There actually may be a point at which a modded E9 has strayed so far beyond our acceptances that we really don't care. But a slight violation of the "code" causes a wailing and a gnashing of the teeth amongst....some. Then there's the, hushed tones now, CSL. THOU SHALT NOT STRAY.

Pulleeese, I simply like the car. It is a gorgeous shape, it's proportions appeal to me like no other that I can think of, it's German, ( don't ask me to explain that ), it has panache, cache, savoir faire, balance, class, presence, ....but, it is NOT holy. It is just a car and I can do what ever I want to my E9

So, what is blasphemy? What is tasteful ( whatever that means ). And is there a definitive E9 "code of ethics"?

The E9 code of ethics is a one page document whose three existing copies
are stored in three continents. I am the keeper of the North American copy
through Dec 2013.
Feel free to ask your specific question. It makes no references to diesel transplants nor commissioning the car as a taxi. And no, it does not codify punishments.
 
Taste defined

I hope this translates well, but "taste" or what we commonly refer to as "beauty" (incorrectly) is an individual "feeling". If we go to the more traditional meaning of what I think we're referring to, I think the statement that "nothing is beautiful unless it is useful", brings us closer to a standard. Thus the lines on the cars we all love such as the creases in the doors add strength, thus they are useful and as such beautiful. I guess we could go deeper but I thought it might be a place to start. :-)
 
Just keep them out of the wreckers yards, I can appreciate a totally original restoration just as much as the stock looking restomod hiding a 5.4l V12.

Whatever rocks your boat is OK, just don't stick a Rolls grill on the front.

Good question, it does seem us E9ers are generally positive to things that will improve driveability and comfort. I.e. springs, engine transplant, 5 speed, seats etc. These are things that do not really change the appearance of the car but make us enjoy it more. These can pretty much always be turned back to original as well.

Changing its appearance is another matter. Like after market sun roof, lowering it 6 inches, non original paint, making it wider etc. Those generally seem frowned upon. And (insert deity) forbid, messing with the lines.


Oh Arde, I am thinking of adding an aftermarket cruise control for the long trips. What does the CoE say about that?
 
CoE guidance on upgrades is clear, electrical is OK, electronic is not.
"elektromos vs elektronikus", for example relays, fuses, switches are ok but no transistors.
The spirit of the code is to allow things that can be troubleshot with an ohmeter, and exclude things that require factory equipment or have self diagnosis.

Oh, mechanical is always allowed, specifically a wooden foot with a clamp to hold the accelerator down in long trips. CoE specifies the shoe and sock color combo though.

After a tour of middle east bazaars I found the NLA pedal accessory in question. It may have been spirited out of Teheran, where BMWs were abundant in the 70s. The Canadian Argo movie crew may have brought this item out under the noses of the regime.

Socks on Birkenstocks are fine.

The only ethics are do unto others

As a dyed-in-the-wool atheist, I can say that the only ethics involving E9s, or any other cars, is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you know the car has rust in certain places and present the car as if it does not, well, you're not coming over to dinner at my house!
 
What's for dinner? We could discuss the pitfalls of the "Golden Rule", as in - does it also apply to masochists?

c'mon Arde ... you need to bring a wonderful trocken reisling, with aromas of petrol to start the dinner with. then you can go with whatever you want ...
