Color Change

i agree with @Thomas76 ... completely. there are several colors that work great with the tan interior. i think chamonix is one of them, but best with red, and a little better with black or blue

tiaga, baikal, ceylon, schwartz, anthracite, turkis, malaga, siena are some of my favorites off the top of my head.
Thanks. I can certainly live with the Chamonix color.

i hear what @kentvonseverin is saying, he has a point, but in order to achieve that you will have to remove all of the chrome / polished trim and redo it all to significantly increase the contrasts between paint / trim. basically everything you would remove to paint it. you will also have to refinish all of the grilles / black trim and wheels. the problem is its a beige car which dilutes contrast. its similar to the problem with a black car - it needs tons of bling and perfect, polished paint to make it pop.

what is hard to tell from the pic in the first post of the thread is how accurate the sahara color is. looks more of a pink beige than a yellow beige ... that might just be the photography. you have a chance if the sahara is the correct yellow beige ... you have no chance if its really that pink of a shade.
No pink.

Scott @rsporsche brings up another factor here. As cars are painted or repainted, there is a variation in color (for the same color by name). I have a light Ivory 356 and the light ivory varied significantly even from the factory. One only has to look at two Fjord blue coupes to notice this issue. You might look at areas of the car that are original paint to learn the exact shade it was when it left the factory.
I have dash out now, so factory color is very similar, perhaps slightly less yellow.

A proper color change requires a lot of disassembly. Stay with a factory color and avoid any shortcuts, like painting the engine compartment black. Sorting out the body and the Sahara paint to a very high level might change your feelings about the color.
That is the only kind of color change I do. All in! No small matter.

I do my own paint, so just takes effort.

Some of you are aware that I recently purchased a Sahara colored E9. It came with a pretty nice refurbished tan interior.

This car has undergone pretty thorough rust repairs that are surprisingly well done. It has a few spots that will require repair. Overall, the paint job was not the best, done by someone far less thorough than the person who did the rust repair.

So, my welder gets some minor action, but the paint booth will be busy.

The issue is color. Sahara is not popular with many, most importantly, my wife. I am leaning toward the Chaminix (sp?) BMW color, but would prefer a pearlescent version.

I know a color change from original is typically a drag on values, but what about when the original color is so unpopular? And what do you think about the impact of using a BMW color vs something off the chart, like a pearlescent white?

You opinions and advice are welcome.
Thanks everybody. I am sticking with a color change, but will stick to BMW colors. Most likely Chamonix.

i like white cars. my 911, my e30/m3, my '82 toyota supra, my current audi tts - all white. @Stan would approve of the TTS as it has black carpet + red seats. there is something about a car with nice curves - white tends to show them off nicely.

We had a '73 Bavaria with what appeared to be a gold flake in the Chamonix paint. It looked great IMHO but it got three separate parking lot dents requiring repainting. Only one of those jobs matched the color perfectly. Sadly (or perhaps not unexpectedly) the one guy retired several years ago.

Moral of the story is that custom paint jobs are hard to match, choose carefully.

Chamonix is a lovely color!

This 2002 was at the San Diego CCA event yesterday. Me: what color is it? Owner: Fjord Me: It has too much purple. Owner: It has always been Fjord. Me: Have a nice day.

I as well, exclusively. The outlier being my e9, as I purchased it from the estate of a fallen friend.

I can't imagine anyone would fault you for changing from Sahara, unless you picked Florida
Any of the darker colors, like Howard I'm also partial to Nachtblau, really suits the lines of the car

What ever you paint it, just do it properly. Personally I’d go for the color chance to anything but Sahara. i think it’s one of the worst factory colors of all time for a coupe. Like Vince, I don’t think it should have ever been offered on a coupe. Personally, it shouldn’t ever have been conceived of at the factory.I can’t think of a single car that looks good in this color, and just about any other color would be better. I would value a Sarah car considerably less than any other color as well. Including a non bmw or period correct color. If anybody who owns a Sahara car reads this, please accept my apologies. ( I’m sure that I own something that ours opine to be ugly)

I went though the same thought process with my 72 cs in Polaris. I’ve just had so many silver cars that I want something with real color. I’m seriously considering the Reseda Green of the slightly later 70’s. Owning a chamonix car im partial to this color. It, or any blue, would look good with your interior. 2$ (inflation)

Ha! That's my old 02. I know every bolt of those RSs, trim, bumpers, interior, etc... Definitely has some lavender in the paint but it wasn't intentional. I ordered 037, it looked right in the can. When I went to see the car after it was was sprayed - . It still looked great, people loved the car, and it even won some awards. It did really well when I sold it on BaT six years ago. Sold it to buy my e39 M5 and I never looked back.

Fjord blue seems to have come in two tones, one green and one red, the green applying to the earlier cars, the red to the later cars.

Have you considered a color change using those new spray on removable paints? This could be an answer to your dilemma.

Chamonix with a tan interior is a very nice combination

For what it’s worth, I changed my ex-Coupe’s colour properly (inside and out when it was reduced to being a rolling shell) from the not-so-unloved Tundra metallic green to Turkis (Turquoise) and I believe the value was enhanced - certainly the offer I got was more than satisfactory when I sold it.
