Compressing U.S. style bumpers

I am looking for information on the best way to "compress" the US spec. bumpers. I know it can be done, just want to make sure I do it the right way.

drill hole in bottom of tube, drain oil, compress to desired distance, put self-tapping metal screw in hole. obviously, the shock-absorption of the bumpers is now ruined, but even in this state these bumpers will provide much more protection than the euro bumpers.

i have a set of bumpers i'll sell that are already compressed if you dont want to mod yours. shipping would be expensive, im in seattle.
