What's the proper installed position for the gaskets? I bought new ones from BMW and they are much longer than the one good one I had. At first I thought they were just poorly made, but then I noticed they more or less fit if the bead of rubber around the edge is placed outside of the light housing rather than in the groove that runs around inside the edge.
Here's the old one. Looks like pretty much every picture online. But maybe they all shrank from age? Fits into the groove on the back of the light perfectly.

And here's the new one if I try to put it in the same position. About 10mm too long. And the corner radii don't match up that well anyway so I still maintain that they are poorly made.

Here's the new gasket compared to the old.

And here's the new one successfully installed in the way you would assume it fits if you hadn't seen the old one. With the bead of rubber outside the light all around. The only way this gasket it going on without modifications. But I don't think it's the right look.
