I appreciate the positive response guys and per request I am posting Coupe Story Part II. Hopefully not disappointing to the faithful followers....
I am now inside the 'glass' garage face-to-face with a middle aged man, inches away from a frame-off CSL restoration.
It was instantly clear to me that he did not speak a word of English! I had to think fast and on my toes....so out went any and all information I knew thus far about coupes...
'oh is that a 3.25LSD?, injected?, Alpina 7x14 wheels?....etc'
He was staring at my lips and I was locked in on his mustache--There was a very serious look on his face.
At this point I was spewing out information and not even making sense,
'why is the radiator connected to the exhaust manifold and not the upper rear shock support?'
That was probably what it sounded like to him, but then as I started to use my hands and point to the car....He broke into a smile, I was relieved.
We had finally reached 'car talk' which supersedes all forms of communication and he began talking back to me in German.
I let him explain and he gave me a brief tour of the car. Out of curiosity, I interrupted him and rubbed my fingers together, 'how much?'
He took a deep breathe....100k Euros (this was many years ago!) and I believed him. Everything about the car and workshop was exquisite.
He continued talking and began telling me the hardest part of assembling the car were certain trim and rubber pieces.
My time was almost up, and I thought to myself: 'what do you expect after going from the street to six inches away from a factory restoration of the iconic BMW CSL.'
That experience made my week and I have been glad to share it with you.
Cheers,
MF
