I want my suspension to be original standard as much as possible and have couple of questions about that.

I have new old stock standard Gabriel shocks for the front and new Bilstein B6 for the rear in hand and don't
have any springs yet...

My questions
1- Would this (Front Gabriel / rear bilstein b6 ) set up be problem about comfort etc. ?

2- Is there any Bmw model e28 e12 etc that has similar springs that I can use on E9? or any brand advice on
reliable and inexpensive springs can be useful. I may not be able source out original E9 springs that is why I am asking this.

i don't think the mixed shocks could be any problem.... how many people don't drive with worn shocks either front or rear , which must be a far greater difference....

sorry , regarding other model springs i can't help you... W&N has them for E9 i believe ....

PS i see your gland mutters in the pic.... i just installed new shocks to found out i have mixed struts.... they exist in M50 and M48... but your "more" OEM type ( as Boge ) shocks have a reduction on top , so i assume they work with either mutter. This is not possible with Bilsteins.... 2 different models.

Gabriel’s weren’t known as a high quality shock when new and weren’t used on BMWs, I wouldn’t mix. The Bilstein B6 is a little firmer but not that noticeable. Only the e12 front spring will work on the e9, rears are completely different as the e12 is like the e3.

I dunno guys. Back in the day, all Bilsteins had higher rates of damping than the OEM Boge shocks. Plus their gas pressure changed the ride height. If the front and rear shocks have appreciably different damping rates the car might bounce a bit unevenly thru dips and bumps. Might not be something you notice, or you might find it annoying. Can you still get Boge's? They were inexpensive in the day and preserved the soft-ish OEM ride.

I searched last year for front struts. Sachs/Boge all gone now. You may, with some patience, find 1 and then eventually another by searching ebay for months, but I am not optimistic. I did find some Konis at a reasonable price. Jim at Mesa Performance had some remaining units. Seems to me Bilsteins are readily available from multiple sources.

If the cars acts abnormal I will get Bilstiens for the front too.

About springs can I use E28 springs some how ?

E28 springs are available near me that is why I am asking.

PS. Shipping and border taxes are all difficult tasks every time when I am buying big parts from US and Europe.

Hi Retro 46 -- I recommend sourcing a set of original e9 springs. I don't think you will find alternative springs that work well. You can probably find inexpensive stock springs in the US as many people here change them for lowering springs. Of course, by the time you add in shipping and border taxes they may not be inexpensive.
