Hi all.

First time post on this forum. I have a 2800cs and it is in need of resto. The main thing that i need is a boot lid. My boot lid is badly rusted across bottom and the rust has made its way under the boot badge.

Any advice from someone who has had the same problem would be great.

Thanks.

rusty trunk lid

I recall a bloke with the same problem. He cut out the rust and primed and repainted and . . . the rust fairy would return. I think he even took the lid to have it chemically stripped but when he saw the amount of patching he gave up and grabbed a better specimen.

Sight unseen, I would guess that your lid has an issue with drainage. If the rubber seal worked properly, water would be channeled around the lid and out the rear. If your lid is not tight enough to compress the seal then . . . uh oh. I had a similar issue with another make and model and literally doubled the seal to "correct" the problem. It looked weird, but it seemed to work. Did not have rust but had wind noise and thought I was smelling fumes.

If you have a "smidgen" of rust it is probably best to treat it now. Unfortunately, with these cars, there is not much difference between a little and a lot.

Inasmuch as I am unable to offer any first hand advice, you might consider re-posting your question in the general forum where it may get more attention.

Good luck and if you find a reasonable approach, please share it!

That is one way to beat the tin worm!

I wonder what an E9 would weigh if we replaced the whole body with fiberglass panels?
