Am looking to buy the green hrm CSi and would like to drive it a few times a week. How does a carb car compare to an injected one for usability and maintenance?
Many thanks.

I've got a '72 CSi, originally delivered to Italy. Newly installed factory A/C and 5-speed. It's my daily driver, every day, all week. Sometime 100+ miles per day across town and back but a vast majority of the time is 8 miles to work, 8 miles home for lunch, then repeat.

Zero issues. I had the D-Jet gone thru by a local Porsche shop (they know about these from 911's and 914's). Apparently the D-Jet is really reliable once it's sorted out by somebody that knows what they're doing. Mine hadn't been looked at for at least 15 years which is why I had it checked. I also had the injectors cleaned and flow checked.

Faster than the carb versions too!

Where are you located?

faster than carbs ?8) you mean full speed ?
bah !
but not as "fast response" as carbs:grin:
carbs kick-off is faster !

i use my 3.0CS as a daily driver in spring, and summer (from may till october) whenever it is not raining
100km per day
it is cool, fast, nice, reliable...
i am my own mechanic and i trust in what i ve done personally

regards

Thanks everyone.
I'm in San Antonio. May look at upgrading ac if anyone has suggestions.

^^^^^Excellent write up ^^^^^^

Basically the same setup as I have. Nice and cold, even in Houston.

There's a Coupe friendly shop in San Antonio or Austin, the name escapes me right now. If you get the car, post up and we can find it

Mine has rebuilt Zenith and running silky smooth.

Terry Sayther Automotive in Austin knows coupes. A year or two ago Terry sold his s38 powered CSL, a car that he built, IIRC. I have purchased parts for some of my other BMWs from him in the past.

This is a great thread. I was not sure about using a CS or CSi as a daily. Right now I drive a 1974 BMW 2002 as my daily...about 30k miles a year. I was wanting to get a CS or CSi to drive as well. Glad to see others are doing it as well.

Thanks!
It looks like I am probably going with the green CSi at Hunting Ridge. Would like to bring is in for a once over and Austin is an hour from San Antonio. The air conditioner upgrade is certainly in the works.

What is everyone's experience with 4 speed vs. 5 speed with regard to a daily driver? Is the 5 speed worth it?

Many thanks.

It is if you are doing highway driving. Otherwise I hardly ever get into 5th.

I read that the 4 speed boxes are 1:1 in 4th gear. Are the 5 speed boxes an overdrive 5th or 1:1 ? Are there some boxes better than others for street vs track use? (this car will be strictly street)

Hopefully I will be able to compile a list of stuff to do for a street coupe to keep me busy.

Many thanks.

5 speed OD box is about 0.83:1 in 5th gear I recall. That is Getrag 265, the most common variant.

There is a CR 5 speed Getrag which is 1:1 in 5th (for track use is the consensus)

Thanks!

I put a 5 speed into mine, assuming (incorrectly) that the 1-4 ratios were better spaced. Nope. (I'm sure somebody will come by and correct me :-D ).

I didn't like the wide ratios. But I think the 5 speed is worth it if you do get on the freeway now and again. I like it and think it was wort the $$$

I had a 2002 with a 4 speed, that was pretty miserable on the highway.

My coupe has a 5 speed, but the engine is so much smoother than the 2002 that leaving it in 4th isn't so bad.

I'd definitely do the 5 speed eventually, but it's not "urgent" IMO.

When I had a Bavaria with the 4 speed i found the engine was really right in the zone between 80 and 90 MPH, which is really the upper limit around here before the Police might as well beat you. I certainly would like the ratios a little closer if I end up going with a 5 speed.

I am mostly city driving so the 4 speed is fine with me. Rpm's at occasional highway cruise at 80 mph is not an issue for me-I think it's 3800 or so. Would like to have 5 speed at some point but plenty of other wants ahead in line and I don't want the shift lever rubbing the trim pieces like some have described.
