In 1987 the previous owner decided he wanted "THE BEST" CSL , so 171 was totally dissassembled, stripped to bare metal and repainted ,[POLARIS SILVER]
At that time the engine and trans were totally rebuilt, the mileage on the ODO was 35,000.
The underside was scraped and sanded to bare metal, Sikkens Primer was applied, then Wurth undercoat re- applied.
Most of the bolt-on parts that could be powder-coated , were.
Calipers, and assorted suspension pieces were rebuilt.
AT around this point the project came to a screeching halt, 171 then was moved to a couple of different shops ,then taken into deep storage in a shipping container with a leaking roof.
The gentleman I purchased the vehicle from was a bit vague on the timeline, but I believe it sat in the container for approx ten years. In mid 2015 I heard of this CSL that was sitting in a container in Sydney, that was for sale, but that the elderly owner would not show it?,so I managed to get the gentleman's phone number , and after about 6-8 weeks and 20 odd calls I managed to finally see the car.
At that point I was not allowed to purchase the car, for the full asking price until he thought about it, IT WAS HELL, but after a few days i was allowed to pick up this BEAUTY.
When stored in the container there was a drip, not heavy, but still drops did land on the roof under heavy rain, as a result there were 'HUMIDITY BLISTERS' over parts of the body, the wood had dried out , and had to be restored, but that was about the extent of the poor storage.
I stripped the body back to bare metal and was very pleased with what was , or was not underneath.
The body shell was beautiful, ZERO , YES ZERO RUST, a couple of bubbles in the left door, so I fitted new W+N alloy door skins L+R , there was a slight scrape on the Left quarter, and a small dent in the Right, otherwise nothing, I have applied epoxy etch primer, and shall begin the paint process.
The previous owner had spent a considerable amount of money on the car , but had unfortunately lost all the receipts. I removed the head to satisfy my curiosity and was pleased to see the tops of high compression pistons, and the head was equally good , so my suspicions were unjustified.
