Hello
I'm after some advise about a CSL that I am looking to purchase. The car has some sort of sound deadening material fitted along the top of both wings under the bonnet it's painted the same colour as the car but does not look original, it's the type of soft material that you would expect to find in the boot/trunk area or under the carpets on some vehicles. I'm pretty sure it has been added for some reason, the metal beneath it seems sound but I'm concerned it may be hiding some issues. Any comments from someone in the know muh appreciated

Thanks Tom

Good luck with that CSL! We often request pictures of the bride in exchange for our opinions.

Mine is original (no rain in California and we put salt in food not roads), but I read that non-original material or black paint in that location is a warning sign worse than just seeing painted metal after a restoration. I also read that you can tell if there is a problem by looking at the adjacent fender to engine bay interface for signs of rust or rust warfare. John B. is one of the body experts on the board and can probably tell you how to know what is behind something without removing it.

Thanks Honolulu
I did try that (I had a magnet with me to check the aluminium panels) and there seemed to be a strong magnetism through the material suggesting there is some steel beneath ? . I have seen many pictures of e9 engine bays on the Internet and a fair few seem to have had this stuff added maybe it does act as some sort of insulation ?

That material is sound deadening material if I am not mistaken and it was standard on CS and CSi's, but I thought was omitted on CSL's (maybe just true of lightweights and not city pack CSL). One of the CSL owners will have to chime in as to the correctness of the material being there. I would make sure that the VIN makes it a real CSL first. If that material is not factory for CSL's then it was put there during a restoration.

Hi Walter
Thanks for your reply the chassis number is correct for a CSL and the car seem Mostly original apart from this sound deadening which seems to have been added ? It may be that it was added along with the city pack rather than to cover corrosion it has been fitted well and would have required prehaps as much effort as repairing the wings properly if it was to cover rust ?

Thanks Tom

What is the VIN? 2275045, a 1972 city pack CSL, does not have the sound deadening like the Cs and CSi coupes. Whether that was a Friday car issue or not is uncertain, but that's what my engine compartment looks like. YMMV.

Cute car, seems like the car was repainted but not restored.
There is a fluid reservoir behind the firewall I am not familiar with, maybe the RHD has it for its brake system layout, not sure.

I cannot see much of the sound deadening material in the two pictures. I think that knowing the year it was repainted can help figure out if there was an attempt to hide something or just keep it original. A recent repaint is always more troubling as it is easier to hide for a shorter time. It looks like the fender attach area of the engine bay has some signs of battle, but other eyes are better trained to opine. I hear that area is expensive to do right.
Given it is a CSL it is probably worth an inspection by a body person.

Hi Tom2240,

If the car is the one with a VIN just around 2285200, pls send me a PM. I might have some additional info.

Cheers
Henric

Hello
Thanks for the response
CSL 1973 I have sent a pm

Roger b I have seen the inka car in the flesh and it appears to be a great car, But it has had a major restoration !!!! judging by the photo file I saw and it made me decide I wanted a more original car and to have a more sympathic restoration. It is a brilliant colour though

Hi Tom2240,

As I have not yet received the PM, cld you pls resend it.

"Roger b I have seen the inka car in the flesh and it appears to be a great car,"

(I know you aren't interested in this car...)

The repaired joint between the outer fender and the intermediate looks wrong/sloppy.
This is the long joint in the engine bay photos where you can see a wobbly line of plug welds from the bulkhead to the front rad panel. There are a number of nice, original CSL's in this area, and in comparison this restoration look to have taken short cuts in this notoiously problematic and very visible area. Also, the engine bay paint appears to have been laid on very thick, muting many of the originally crisp joints. Personally this just looks wrong to me and makes it feel as though either some coverup in going on or the restoration shop simply isn't very experienced in doing CSLs the right way (go to Mario or Ron). These things would make me just a tad wary about the quality and thoroughness of the restoration.

Hi Bfeng
Thanks for taking the time to post, I totally agree with your comments on the inca car it should have read " appears " to be a great car but on closer inspection and on looking through the resto photos I think not a amazing quality job. Which is why I am going for the fjord car and making sure it gets done correctly. Any thoughts on the fjord car appreciated
Tom
