CSL Hommage R reveal at Pebble Beach

I just don't see the CSL in the new concept car. If you remove the decals it just looks like a BMW I8 with fender flares, a spoiler and bigger wheels.

This just in, BMW reveals their new Protege designer who was the mastermind of the CSL Hommage car.

He started his career working for the studios as a costume designer namely for the sci-fi channel.

Its a Hommage guys.

Gents

They actually launched the car at the Quail on the Friday and I thought it was absolutely stunning, a wonderful modern interpretation of a car we all love.

BMW used one of my early Carb CSL's (1971) to show where the idea came from.

While everybody is entitled to their own opinions, i think some are missing the boat here, its a Hommage to an earlier car, a tribute, just like the M1 hommage was and the 328 Hommage was.

With this Hommage, BMW are ranking the E9 alongside two of the greatest cars it ever made, the M1 and the 328, I would have thought that was something to be celebrated.

I have many pictures of it with my car, but can't seem to download on here.

Many thanks Chris, for helping a luddite like myself here.

The first picture has an interesting story attached.

Ludwig Willisch himself comes up to me at the Quail and thanks me for loaning BMW my CSL, we have a fantastic conversation, the man is an absolute gentleman.

Then he ask me if there is anything further they could do to make my day better. Me being me, if you look at the second picture you can see the stand as it was set up, with the cars separated with chairs etc. So I asked if they could put the cars together so I could take a picture of them alongside each other.

Ludwig tells the BMW hierarchy to make it happen, it probably took them an hour to do, what with borrowing ramps from Porsche and being extremely careful getting the Hommage off its set up positioning.

Then the public goes crazy because the Hommage is being moved and crowds gather. BMW move everybody aside, so Jennifer and I can get a picture of just us with both cars, something I have no doubt I will never be able to do again.

What other manufacture would go to all that trouble..........Thats why I love BMW.

I have to agree wi BMWpete. This is a stunning design in my eyes. It's probably as outlandish today as the Bat was when it w launched. Except this one feels like it was designed this way right from the start.

That DB5 hommage is fantastic looking, the only drawbacks are the oversize rims, I hate that look, I guess I am an old fuddy duddy but a couple more inches of rubber and it would be perfect imho. Now get off my lawn!

Pete, great story and your car is amazing, early carb csl's rule in my book.

just not a fan of the CSL study ... take a look at what David Brown has created ... does it remind you of his earlier work?

Although I have to say that even though I did not like the golf color of the "street" version presented earlier in Italy, I think the seventies style racing stripes with gold wheels they slapped on it here do not work very well at all with this busy design.

It is ironic that BMWpete's car is the same color as that street version of the Hommage (IIRC) but they brought this white R version instead.

Steve,

completely agree on all counts - first, Pete's car is amazing ... i had the same feeling about the wheels on all of the hommage cars. i've been having the same opinion looking at my 911 w/ its 19" wheels and 35 series tires. drives great, but just has the look that it needs more rubber underneath.

Pete, thanks for sharing

Pete, thanks for sharing the photos. I saw the homage on Sunday outside the entrance to the Concours, and I got a few pix myself. I like it pretty well, but agree with the others on the ever increasing wheel size that these cars seem to be designed around.

Pete, there was another CSL at the Quail, with a picture on my friend's blog called the TheAutoBlonde.com. Yours also? Looks a bit like the car BMW displayed at Amelia Island in March.

This Polaris car.

I may be the odd one out here but I don't see anything on the new design that reminds me of the original CSL. I think if BMW didn't implant the idea that this is an homage to the CSL most would never make the connection and more likely think it is a BMW I8 modified for track use. They made an effort wit the C-Pillar but to me that is where the similarities and "Homage" ends. By the way the I8 seems to have the exact C-Pillar design. Maybe the I8 pays tribute to the regular non bat coupes???

Thanks Everybody for the kind words on my CSL. It certainly garnered a lot of compliments on the day, which was nice. Lovely hearing stories from BMW guests, all talking about either owning these in the day or wanting to own one.

Hi Scott, sadly Silver car was not mine.

I think Bmachine makes a great point, I imagine the comments were very similar in 1973 on the first Batmobile.

I will share a couple more pictures just for fun and maybe softly show why I love the thing:-) sadly the other pictures are not loading, I will try again later.
