I hadn't seen one of these before. But do recall hearing that the mechanical elements are widely exchangeable. A potential fix for a sometimes troublesome NLA part?

Can't vouch for this, but maybe someone here knows... http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=261933548138&fromWatch=true

Here is a Benz forum post showing disassembly. And a picture of my spare disassembled as shown in the Benz post. Now for the Ebay replacement the remaining thing is to remove the plunger unit from the metal ring. Note sure how to do that without damaging the unit (which i wouldn't matter if replacing.) http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c...te/20548/topics/1600137?page=3&postid=4764787

Thanks for the MB link which shows step by step photos for repairing. Glad I didn't throw my broken one away .

The part on ebay isn't usually the problem and can be reused when overhauling the unit.

I've between advised that using the Benzworld approach to tapping apart can damage the sliding cylinder. Though I mine seemed to come apart without problem and cylinder slides smoothly after cleanup. But the preferred technique seems to be using a puller to remove top of unit first.

And I wrote the eBay seller and learned that unit closes fully at 50 degrees C rather than 70. Perhaps would have a rougher idle for a period?

Henrik,
Would you be willing to explain more? Is the problem often that the piston just needs cleaning?

Yes, the cleaning is the main thing here! I have done this a couple of times on two different engines and they works great after the overhaul. I polished the piston and the cylinder well before assembling the unit. I used the Benz method and it worked well. Let the airflow gap be very small when assembling. If not, the engine will run with high rev. for a longer period than necessary. I made an illustrated instruction for our e9 AAV's but did not succeed in posting it here on the forum. I will try again, after Easter holiday.
