Does anybody have knowledge on this subject ? It seems later CSI tanks are slightly different to older ones. Can they be adapted ?

And is it possible to adapt a CS tank to a CSI one ?

Many thanks,

Damien

Later tanks don't fit in early cars.
Big difference.
Don't waste your time get the correct tank.

It is possible to use a cs tank as a csi tank if you use a 1991 318is modified intank fuel pump.

There are 5 different tanks that I know of:

2800cs-smaller
3.0cs-has no return
3.0csi-has pickup and return for fuel
anything 1974 and later is a bottom mount unit with a "bayonet" filler and comes in a 3.0cs and 3.0csi combinations

I am not sure how much smaller the 2800cs gas tank is compared to the 3 liter cars, I do know they are shallower and use a shorter pickup unit.

Thanks guys, I've got my answer and you're all right on the money.

I closely inspected my tank, which I either 74 or 75, and it has what I believe is the later config of a large hole with around 12 threaded holes around the perimeter. There is a ring which is welded to the inside of the tank which has the threaded holes, would be possible to replicate it in theory to adapt a CS tank, which was my hope. But you'd never get it into tank. Also, the unit that slots in, has some kind of female slot it plugs into, which seems to be welded to the bottom of the tank.

That all probably makes no sense, but it means it simply will not work.

My tank just sits in the opening in the boot / trunk, it isn't mounted from underneath.

Just in case anyone needs this info in future.

Thanks,

Damien

Here we go.....

2800 tank
3.0 cs tank up to 74 no return
1974-75 cs tank has a unused return nipple
Early csi tank
Late csi tank
Both csi tanks have 2 holes and can use a 1990 pickup/pump with sender from 1980's. Use block off plate for second hole

All tanks can use the 318csi pickup/ pump with a 1980's sending unit

pics?

Any chance we could post some pics on the matter?

I have started rehabing a spare tank that my brother had in the rafters for years. Don't recall what year it came from, either a 2800 or 3.0, he has had examples of both.....

I may have some pics somewhere....

This topic (quick visual ID cues) might be a good topic to sticky/archive....

Q:
If I retrofit my 2800CS with the later pre-74 70l size tank, would I need a different sender and/or pickup?
