Does anyone have closeup pics of a genuine leather 38cm CSL Petri steering wheel?

I have a lead on what may be a leather CSL Petri steering wheel or at least is a very nice original looking recovered one in 38cm. Can someone please post some close up pics of the genuine article including the stitching around the back of the rim and where it comes up on the base of the spokes front and back? I can't find any definitive source for the correct/original stitch pattern etc.

Also is there any rhyme or reason to the Phillips vs. hex screws? I've seen both.

This hub appears to be longer than my current 38cm foam Petri, what is the difference supposed to be?

Thanks.

steve, as far as i can tell an original petri for csl has a different hub indeed, you know that there is an internal metallic hub that has a sort of waves, well the normal is three waves and the csl four,
i have never seen one but a guy in germany that sells spares and NOS parts told me this

Many pics below

Steve,

The only way to positively ID the 38cm BMW CSL Petri is to check for the part # that is stamped inside the interior base of the alloy hub. The 38cm leather wheel should have the part # of 32 33 1 112 244 and 32 33 1 109 738 for the 40cm foam wheel. Don't know if BMW ever offered the 380mm foam Petri wheels (these may've come from the VW Sciroccos).

The 38cm "244" hub is definitely taller than the 40cm "738" unit. The "244" measures 4 5/8" in height and the "738" hub measures 4 1/8". The corresponding plastic hats/hoods are as follow: "244' cover is 4 1/16" height wise and the "738" is 3 3/4 tall.

As far as the screws used, I prefer the looks of the allen head versus the phillip heads. The allen screws make for a more "industrial machined" look.

All the photos below are from my professionally recovered 38cm BMW Petri bought back in 2007. The 40cm hub is from my leather re-wrapped (over foam core) Petri. I seem to have misplaced this wheel somewhere at the moment and don't have any pics of it.

380mm Petri hub- 32 33 1 112 244. Disregard the extra "1" at the end from both hubs. The stamped numbers are really hard to make out (in particular the 4s) even with a magnifying glass. This is where the camera's macro feature really came in handy. Notice the BMW Roundel logo to the immediate left of the numbers.

Not very well done here. The stitchings should have been situated exactly in the middle.

Notice the significant height difference between the 2 hubs. Believe this has to do with the spokes of the 38cm being relatively flat vs the concaved spokes of the 40cm wheel. So with the proper hubs installed on both size wheels, they should be about the same height from tip of the splined spindles to the top of steering wheels grips. As deQuincey had previously mentioned, the CSL hub has 4 "waves" vs the 3 "waves of the 40cm Petri.

Hope this helps Steve.

Bert this is great, one favor, can you measure both plastic hub covers from the bottom edge to the bottom of the notch for the spoke (the red line in the pic)? Thanks.

+1 I have one currently on my car with 3 wave hub and West German Petri button. 35cm was for the 2002 usually. 38cm and 40cm for the e9.

I think there were 38 cm foam Petri wheels available for the smaller BMW cars, like the 2002.

Bert, what about the hub ending in "943" - that looks like a CSL Lederlenkrad like the "243" one - unless one is leather and one foam - both say 380mm.

Steve, the length measurement that you had requested is 3 7/8".

As for the "943" wheel/hub, I have no idea where it comes from. It is not listed in the original parts books. Interesting how the 38cm "244" wheel is listed for all E9 applications and the 40cm "738" wheel is listed for CSL's. The info have been inverted during printing.

Side notes for the grips on both wheels: 40cm wheels have soft foam core grips that are then embossed with a black leather liked texture. 38cm leather wrapped wheels have irregular shaped grips (not circular) that have solid rigid cores.

It looks like I have the Lederlenkrad CSL hub #244. I will post some pics of the leather and stitching this weekend.
