What sort of plug belongs here- plastic or rubber, black, white, translucent? I measure 23 mm and struck out at Home Depot.

Hmm, just to be sure: are you certain they are 23 mm?
As the e9 is full of 20 mm holes with original caps are like this but less dirty/ dinged up. These are used on inside of sill, inside rear wheel housing, inside doorjamb on Lower A-pillar (see pic) etc....

Worth double checking for sure so I just went back out to the garage. I chose two sockets measuring 23mm and 24mms outside diameter with a caliper. 23mm goes in the hole, 24mm does not.

Those Restro Country 23mm plugs don’t fit. They’re too small. The Home Depot plugs mentioned in another thread don’t fit either. They’re too big.

Just received mine and agree, they are a passive “fit” but need a bigger lip to retain. Should be able to add a little rim of silicone and paint them white, I’ll report back

OK just a little clear silicone added to make the retaining lip a bit wider and these plugs seem fine. I’m not going to paint them white because I would expect them to show wear and dirt.

This is slightly off-topic, but does anyone have either a part number or some of the plastic plugs that go into the chrome door jambs? It looks like the same plugs are used in the bottom of the trunk lid?

Here's a picture and I'm missing 3.

I think those are from an aftermarket anti-rust application it is not factory. And neither of my e9s have holes and plugs behind the B pillar trim.

Opaque white plastic. Last I checked they were NLA.

I realize this is an old thread that was bumped today, but I thought I'd mention this...

Knecht air filters on mid-60s Porsches have 23mm holes, and one hole always had a nylon plug.
The original plug pictured below has yellowed with age.

New opaque white plugs are available for these.
I've never needed to order any, so I can't comment on their fit, quality or appearance, but it might be worth buying one to find out...

Thanks for the replies and that is surprising; I've owned the car since 1987 and they've always been there. I assumed they were factory. If they were drilled for an anti-rust application, it clearly didn't take considering the rust repair I had to do when the car was restored!
