Not sure specifically which part you're referring to but in general dry sump oil pumps are used in motorsports to insure that the motor receives a steady supply of oil under braking and cornering. Racing CSLs used dry sump pumps except for a time during which group 2 regulations forbade them, in the name of cost restriction. Dry sump pumps combine both scavenge and pressure sections. By running large scavenge sections (lots of vacuum) some modest HP gains can be achieved on top of the reliability benefits.
 
Dry sump also allows the engine to be mounted lower by eliminating the oil pan thus lowering the center of gravity and improving handling.
