So, I am finally getting around to pulling the tired and smokey engine out of my Bavaria. I have an engine out of a 84 633CSI and 5 speed trans that I want to put in.

I have done a lot of searching and keep coming up with dead links.

I will be putting the dual carb set up out of the Bavaria on the 84 engine. (Any issues with this?)

Can someone point me in the right direction on some of the following:

What about ignition? Is it best to swap the whole points system over from the existing engine? There is no way to keep the distributor from the new one, correct?

Any drive shaft modifications necessary? I pulled the one from the E24 just in case.

I read the brake booster has to be changed or shifted.

Any other advice about oil pans or anything else I should look for would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I put an 88 m30b35 long block in my Bav with carbs. No problems putting them on, no need to change the booster, etc. You'll need an electric fuel pump, I used the lift pump from a 633csi. You can install the original distributor with the use of a cam adapter nut available from BMW and use your original front top cover. You may want to keep your original oil pump and pan so it will clear your suspension. You'll need to adapt the driveshaft as the stock one is too long for the 5-speed.

Thanks--I emailed him and the rear drive shaft was already sold. I am try to get some other parts from him. There is another guy that has 2 Bavarias that he is parting out in Seattle as well. Poor Bavarias--they seem to go to Seattle to die.

So--the driveshaft from my 72 had been messed with in the past and the driveshaft shop says they cannot shorten it. So now I need a new core or a driveshaft that does not need to be shortened. So when going from a 4 speed to a 5 speed is there one from another car that will bolt in? Also, if I do have to get a new core, what should I expect to pay to have it shortened?

Are you referring to the front half of your driveshaft?

Also, I don't have my old drive shaft. I know 3.75 gets cut, but how long should it be?

I'm using an old E9 driveshaft in my Bav, the one that came with the car developed a ticking noise and I replaced it. I'm not sure what car the original one came out of because there were little adapter plates to locate the center bearing. The e9 shaft uses the stock center bearing mounts so the front half must be very similar in length to the one you'll need. It is 20-3/8" from the outer surface of the guibo flange to the center of the u-joint. The rear half is 37-1/2" from the outer edge of the differential flange to the end of the cap where the splined section inserts. A little shorter on the rear half wouldn't hurt at all as the e9 shaft is on the cusp of being too long.

What carbs does your Bav have? Zeniths? Webers? It is very likely, in either case, that they'll need to be re-jetted.

Webers. I have not fired it up yet. I think others have not rejetted them when installing on an FI engine.

Well... I can tell you that my Weber jetting on my M30B35 is far different than it was on my 3.0... And it is also far different from the jetting I've seen suggested in these forums for M30s in general. I'd be curious to see if your car runs very rich at WOT as it is.
