In my never ending quest to find a decently priced toolbox i spoke to an old bloke last week here in Perth with a couple E3s for sale. Whilst no joy with the toolbox, he said he had a new, or almost new, E3 factory exhaust, complete with stickers, in his garage rafters. A$200 (US$180) takes it. He thought it was the same system as an e9.

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks.

E3 vs.E9 exhaust differences

The pictures speak for themselves. However, although purists may scoff, where there is a will, there is a way. I have seen the E-3 center resonator/muffler and the secondary resonator (the bedwarmer) modified for use on an E-9. But you need to be handy with a torch. The E-3 rear muffler is too large to fit between the differential and the spare tire housing. So unless you want to take a sledge hammer to make it fit, it is hardly worth considering.

Years ago I had someone borrow an E-3 rear muffler from the garage so that he might measure it for use on an 2002. It was hardly practical because it hung too low and came awfully close to either the petrol tank and/or the spare wheel well, but I think he eventually used it. Interesting conversation piece, especially when driving over railroad tracks!

I cannot say for certain, but I have heard of others who used exhausts sections from Mercedes and possibly even Jaguar. The E-3 is a logical starting place, but one size does not always fit all.

Exhaust system parts interchange.

The front part is the same, but there are different parts for 2.8s and 3.0s. The downpipes from the engine to the front muffler are all the same. Everything behind the front muffler is different for E3s and E9s.

Not to disagree with the obviously knowledgeable Orangener and BillR, the diagrams/pictures are quite deceptive. http://de.bmwfans.info/original/E3/Lim/3.0Si-M30/ECE/L/M/1973/02/mg-18/ill-18_0351/ depicts an earlier E-3 model and the rear muffler "almost" looks like it is dimensionally very similar to the CS rear muffler. My point is that the outside diameter of the E-3 rear muffler may be as much as two or more inches larger than an E-9 rear muffler. I think that the inside diameter of the exhaust pipe may be larger that the E-9 too, but if the outside wont fit, I guess it does not matter!

Good luck and I would not waste my time unlessI had or expected to obtain an E-3, the parts were gratis, and I had unlimited storage space.
