The e3 has several different windshield seals or gaskets based upon Euro vs. U.S. and pre-9/73 and post-9/73. The biggest difference is that U.S. cars had metal strips riveted around the complete windshield opening and it is speculated that the U.S. seals had a larger opening in the rubber. The rear window on U.S. cars has the metal strip only on the roof and not the sides or bottom. I have removed these front strips from my 2800 and the seal fit just fine although I don’t know which part number I used as it was a 30 year old NOS seal. I left the rear strip in place and it also fit fine. Also, the later seals post 9/73 have a wider lower trim piece and two unique lower corner pieces which can not be used with the early seals. Here are the relevant part numbers:

FRONT:

Early Euro 51 31 1 800 470 non-laminated
Early U.S. 51 31 1809 676 laminated

Early Euro 51 31 1 814 611 from Modell 71
Early U.S. 51 31 1 814 613 from Modell 71
Early U.S. 51 31 1 823 080 from 7/71 to 8/73 (3.0 Bav)

Late Euro 51 31 1 828 248 from 9/73
Late U.S. 51 31 1 828 235 from 9/73 (U.S. 3.0S and 3.0Si)

REAR:

Early 51 31 1 800 471 up to 8/73
Late 51 31 1 828 234 from 9/73

There is more discussion here especially beginning on page 3.

Thanks Chris for this summary.
I have a US model 71 2800. Production date is Dec. 69
I just bought 51 31 1 814 611 as it is the only one available. When the time comes to use it, I will report back on how it fits. I am just hoping there is no difference in the rubber gap for the windshield as I read that the US windshields might be thicker than the Euro ones due to some DOT regulations.
