E9 "light body" for sale - hmmm.....

he did send me a pic of the VIN that was not part of the Humer Granner auction. the pics are different than the auction, but i meant to look to see if any of them were the same, photoshop into a different surround ... had already given up by that point.

the seller / broker has offered anybody in Germany that wants to go see the car - it is at a BMW dealer in Germany. the owner of the dealership is apparently the one who had it for sale at the HG auction and bought it back as the price was too low. apparently all of the paperwork is at the dealer.

I did some looking and found this post from 2011 from member CSL 1973

"As far as I remember (pls correct me if I'm wrong), the first city-pack CSL in this VIN-range, was 2275014. There were about 150 city-pack CSL cars up to VIN 2275294. Thereafter, about 20 city-pack cars are currently known. All in all, I would guess about 200-220 city-pack cars among the 429 cars in this VIN range (2275001-2275429). I also think that at the end of this production period, customers were asked to specially request if they wanted the non city-pack version. As default, the CSL was delivered with the city-pack."

This package included features like power steering, a heated rear window, additional sound deadening, velour carpet, and a normal locking bonnet and boot lid. The City Package also included a fully undersealed chassis, a laminated windscreen, proper side glass, and CS/CSi suspension settings.

Being that this is the next to the last of the series 2 CSL (2275001-2275429) and the explanation from CSL 1973 it looks like it could well be a proper CSL, but with the City Package and the fact that it's not numbers matching those need to be considered in pricing the car.

It's still a stunning car, but to me the City Package actually detracts from the desirability. The things that make the CSL special were things like the plexiglass windows, the no power steering and brakes and the stripped nature that the City Package takes away. The conundrum in that if you're restoring one to a very high level (as this one appears to be), you want to do it to an "as delivered" state and that means with the City Package in this case. If you're looking for the real CSL experience then this isn't that car and to me that's less desirable. To others they may want to drive the car and those features may make the car more valuable, it's a matter of opinion but not my cup of tea.

In terms of the aesthetics of the CSL I prefer the look of a true City Pack. But if I had the money, the youth, and the talent I would be racing one of BMWPete's CSLs. I would audition to be his factory driver. Sigh, it is not to be.
