I have a 1973 CSi and both the turn signal/wiper switch as well as the high/low beam switch have gone bad. I was able to cobble together the turn signal/wiper switch, but the high/low beam switch is cracked and DOA.

As the 1973 had the turn signal on the right, as anyone successfully updated a CSi to the later setup (turn signal/DIP on left, wiper on right)?

The later set up parts seem to be much more readily available.

Further question - are there a later model BMW switches that might be a bit beefier and can be retro-fitted to the E9?

there is no question that it will fit, you will have to turn around the key on the back of the steering wheel to cancel the turn signal. now for the harder part - your existing '73 switches have different electrical connectors than the '74. you will have to tap into the wires and attach the existing connector to the wiring of the new switch. you will have to look at the two wiring diagrams to make sure you get it right.

heres the exact 74 i verified every wire
some of the callouts maybe incorrect but
heres the legend also

I replaced my headlight/dip switch with a heavy duty on/on toggle switch, grafted the old E3 handle onto it, and epoxied it into the old housing. I lost the dip function, but I wasn't much of a dipper anyway. The wiper switch function of the turn signal switch failed so I tapped into the wiring and installed a separate toggle switch in an existing hole down by my rear window heater switch.

Thank you for the responses.

I definitely have to figure out the wiring as the harness of the current DIP is non-standarrd. At some point, someone replaced it.

I've found a used '73 dip for now - but longterm, I am considering the swap.
