Hi all,

I managed to find a clutch pedal for my auto-to-manual swap. My car is a '74 and the pedal I bought came from an early '73 car. If I understand correctly, the early vs late clutch pedals are bit different, which I've tried to capture in this table:

"Early" Clutch Pedal"Late" Clutch Pedal
Date Range≤ 10/197310/1973+
Part No.3531110073335311112267
Pedal Box CompatibilityAll years10/1973+ pedal box
Return SpringTraditional return springOver-center assist/return spring (35311111504)

Based on the parts diagrams, it appears the only difference is the tang of metal that accommodates the over-center spring. Since my late pedal box is set up for the over-center return spring, I'd like to modify my early pedal to accept it.

Does anyone have a "late" clutch pedal sitting on their shelf that could measure the following:
Solved!
Measurements below:
  • a: 50mm - distance between centers of the return spring pivot and the clutch pedal pivot
  • b: 36mm - approximate height of tang
  • c: 10mm - diameter of return spring pivot hole
  • d: Yes, both holes are inline - Are both holes inline with each other on the horizontal plane? If not, what is the distance from the top of the pedal to the center of the return spring pivot?

Thanks in advance!

There is another difference- the size and shape of the clutch pedal and brake pedal.

You can drop by my shop and exchange your early clutch pedal for a late pedal at no charge. I personally don’t like the over under spring that came in the later model BMW cars…. So that I have a matched set, bring the brake and clutch pedals if you want to exchange.

Bare metal = "early" pedal
Black = "late" pedal
