wanted to install oem emergengy brake ( was replaced by hydraulic hand brake in the "rally" version ) , bought new cables at W&N... but they seem to be to short .
When i pull al the way they allow , i get the M6 threaded rods just level with the hand brake eyes.... so no space for even one nut . I remember doing it in the blue CS and there was a lot of play , 2 nuts and some thread above .

Anybody had this ? bought recently those cables at W&N ??

Any tips ? shorten the metal tubes under the car a bit ?? or the nylon tip from the cable going in those ?

I am in the middle of doing a 71 2002 ti restoration and put new handbrake cables in as well, did not have the old ones around to compare and found them to be too short as well, I cut the tubes down a bit and now, everything works fine Another little trick is to put heavy duty heat shrink tubing around where the cable fit into the tubes, that will seal them off and stop any issues with the cables rusting into the tubes

Thanks, Rick

Would love to see a photo of this, as I am not sure I follow where you are putting the heat shrink. Sounds like a great edit! Thank you for sharing.

what brake cables did you buy?

I hear 2800CS cables are diff than 3.0CS ones.

i bought the later years cables as i have the rear suspension with the disc brakes. ( not the '70 oem drum brakes)
Indeed the cable eye is much bigger for the early drum brakes.

i'm not shortening the tubes as the cable routing is already just fitting.... sure on the exhaust side.
I think of extensions on the M6 threaded rods. Perhaps shorten those and mount longer M6 rods .

I wouldn't easily do something that is irreversible like shortening the tubes under the car. be aware that if you do that, that next time a cable snaps you have a problem again likely, as then the tubes are too short for your then new cable.

What length do you have on the W&N parts? pls measure and share with some pics how you measured it.
I have an old OEM part for disc brake version from which i can measure the length in the exact same manner as well.
This way you could identify if the cable is correct or not.

If you learn that you have an incorrect cable, it makes most sense to find the correct length of the cable. Possibly W&N send you an incorrect one? ( I once received a 2002 rear valance for my e9 by mistake...They are human as well. )

sorry Erik , no measures.... cables are installed.

W&N has only 2 versions , one for the early drum brakes and one for the later discs. One can see direct what it is , as the drum brake version has big eyes on the cable , which would never be possible to mount on a disc . Even seen today the disc version is NA.... perhaps i bought the last 2 ?

I made extensions : long M6 nuts which i turned down to dia 8 mm. That makes it possible to just mount them aside the brake lever. Cut the cable's thread a part away and some longer M6 rods. ( the 8 mm "tube" can't go trough the brake lever eyes, so this connection needs to be lower beyond the setting range)

PS i did not use the pin for the brake lever , as that has a lot "play". I made bronz bushings ( dia 14/10 ) and a M10 bolt with self locking nut. Each side i mounted some copper washers so that i can almost tension it to "no play" but still good rotating. Even had to weld new supports in the car as those were grinded away for the hydraulic rally brake.

i hate installing emergengy brakes.... all those little parts..... but at least the drums inside the discs are still new here :D
