Engine bay / fender sound deadening material

I am doing a resto on a 2002ti and am going to use Lizard Skin sound dampening spray First time using it, about a month away from applying it Will be interesting how it will work I will use the 3M pads in the heater box area and maybe on the tunnel and firewall a bit before applying the Lizard Skin

i don't like the lizard skin when visible. its fine in the covered portions of the trunk or under the carpet / behind the door panels.
 
What are the plusses and minuses to painting the (new) material or just sticking it on top of new paint? I am planning on scraping the old stuff off (it's cracking off) and touch up repainting . . .

I’ve been wondering about that as well. The problem with the original material is that it was applied directly to unprotected metal. As soon as some humidity got trapped under that, the cancer started. So it would seem to make sense to paint first, then apply sound deadening and then paint those areas by themselves.
 
Prime the metal
apply adhesive to factory bitumin/peel backing on Cswerke bitumin
seal with oil based sealer
paint
clearcoat

Keep in mind that factory available bitumin has more pronounced hexagons and no protective shiny surface compared to Cswerke.

Does anyone here who has removed it have before / after impressions of how much good the stuff does? For instance more or less road, wind, or engine noise in the cabin without it?

I doubt it makes a great deal of difference. On my coupe, the wind noise from the ill-fitting side windows would drown out any noise reduction from underhood deadening. I'd still add the stuff, but more to maintain the original appearance - kind of like applying reproduction underhood stickers.

My guess is that it acts less as a sound barrier, and more as a way of preventing the metal around the spring towers from ringing. Sticking heavy padding to that metal will lower its resonant frequency to the sub-sonic range.

I left the insulation off as I always thought it looked cheap and besides I dyna matted the entire firewall after applying "Dominator sound deadening" underside and topsides of floors.....so a bit of an over kill. I get absolutely no noise at all including transmission and tire noise..................very happy with the set up. Bit of exhaust noise though......but that's music.:D
